S&S made the pipes your looking for back in the 70s saw a NOS set on ebay recently.The Z cross is a nice system but you can buy a complete bike ridin and drivin for the price.

Seller says they are off a 1979 KZ1000MkII, so I believe they would fit your 1977 KZ1000 just fine.

Surely there is enough parts around to make a replica say using Honda 750 mufflers from the same era

The stock exhaust for a KZ1000A was a 4 into 2 system, only used for the 1977 and 1978 years, with some minor differences in 1978. These have become very scarce, with them occasionally coming up on eBay. There was a set this summer that were listed for over $3,000! There used to be a link here for a reproduction set made in Italy that looked pretty good but had mixed reviews. I sometimes see aftermarket 4 into 2 systems by Jardine and the likes for the A1. I managed to find a set a couple of years ago that is far better than the set that I've had for 40 odd years.  www.kzrider.com/forum/2-engine/615703-kz...ting-question#846445   Had I not found these, I was possibly going to get a set fabricated, using my header pipes, as it was only the mufflers that had rotted out. 

There's plenty of options for z1000 4/2 repop systems.

Busso were the ones I was thinking of that were posted here before. The OS ones look terrific. Any idea of the price?

Very mixed reviews on the busso system. The UK distributor for them dropped them due to quality and service issues. 
Only heard good things about OS both quality and service. Similar cost to busso. 
Bazar de la becane are stainless and cost because of it.
