All I know is I love my bike...and whatever oil it needs...I will surely get her...My petcock was jacked up, and so the oil in my bike was no good...Plus it had been sitting for about 13 years...so yeah...it needed to go to say the least....But I will probably just go with GPX again for saftey, and some lucas oil additive..

be carefull of putting extra additives in your oil as they are designed for an engine that does not share a clutch or transmission it can cause a lot of slippage in the clutch as the additves are usally friction modifiers designed to reduce friction in the engine which can make it to slippery for your clutch pack

I run the Chevron Delo or Shell Rotella in my CB750. The KZ hasn't run in years, but when it does, I plan to use the same in it.

ive heard thru the grape vine that alot of high dollar car engine builders are recommending for there clients to use desial oils in there engines for a couple of reasons one is the detergents that are in that type of oil and the second is they haven't changed the formulation like they have in car oils so it might work at least it will keep the engine clean i'd still be carefull with it if you do notice any wierdness happening with the clutch or the way it shifts switch back to motorcycle oils alot of the newer types of oils are so thin that they are being blamed for arash of flat tappet camshafts being wiped out in these crate motors that are now being built now adays also it is also giving some builders fits with hydraulic liftered motors and as our motors are basiclly flat tappet engines we could also have similar problems

changing oil on time seems to be the best way with any oil from what I've seen

I've been using Valvoline 20-50 for many years with no problems. I agree that conventional motor oils are not designed for transmission applications but I change my oil every 1000 miles so no problem there. In 29 years my bike has never seen dirty oil.

Thanks timebomb33 for your recommendation . I had the same oil-related question , as I've recently acquired a nice '77 KZ1000A1 and it will receive only the best possible treatment ! I've decided to use conventional Castrol 10W40 Grand prix 4 stroke motorcycle oil .

The key is:
1) not to leave oil in the bike too long, 2) get the bike up to full operating temperature every time you take the bike out, and 3) avoid oils with friction reducing additives (stay with oils formulated for wet clutch operation).

Short trips cause condensation to build up inside the engine. This causes that milky white film you get on the inside of the oil window. You need to be running at least 25-30 miles when you take the bike out.

If you add an oil cooler, often they OVER cool the oil and this stops the condensation getting burned off (and stop component tollerances from coming up to spec).

Change your oil in the fall to clean out the old oil and all the contaminates that accumulate in it.

THis makes sense. I usually change mine in the spring before taking her out for the first time. I will change up this practice.

Good choice Joe, your motorcycle will love it as mine do and I have checked for wear metals per used oil analyses and they are very low. Welcome to the forum:)
