changing oil on time seems to be the best way with any oil from what I've seen
I've been using Valvoline 20-50 for many years with no problems. I agree that conventional motor oils are not designed for transmission applications but I change my oil every 1000 miles so no problem there. In 29 years my bike has never seen dirty oil.

1) not to leave oil in the bike too long, 2) get the bike up to full operating temperature every time you take the bike out, and 3) avoid oils with friction reducing additives (stay with oils formulated for wet clutch operation).
Short trips cause condensation to build up inside the engine. This causes that milky white film you get on the inside of the oil window. You need to be running at least 25-30 miles when you take the bike out.
If you add an oil cooler, often they OVER cool the oil and this stops the condensation getting burned off (and stop component tollerances from coming up to spec).
Change your oil in the fall to clean out the old oil and all the contaminates that accumulate in it.

THis makes sense. I usually change mine in the spring before taking her out for the first time. I will change up this practice.

Thanks timebomb33 for your recommendation . I had the same oil-related question , as I've recently acquired a nice '77 KZ1000A1 and it will receive only the best possible treatment ! I've decided to use conventional Castrol 10W40 Grand prix 4 stroke motorcycle oil .
Good choice Joe, your motorcycle will love it as mine do and I have checked for wear metals per used oil analyses and they are very low. Welcome to the forum:)
