Yea, I just pushed mine right out to have the cover chrome plated. I'm hoping it goes back in!

I have removed and replaced quite a few of them. They go in easier then they come out. I have cracked a few taking them out. The trick is to use a piece of wood or plastic which is the full width of the slit and apply slow and easy pressure until it pops. I remove them when I GunKote a cover and have to bake it at 350f.

As with a lot of the seals... Find a socket the same size as the diameter.
In this case apply pressure/impact from the inside cover to the outside....
Or do as Plummen informed me way back when, take a heating torch to it and melt them sonsabitches off....

I just installed the window in a freshly chromed cover and NOW I have a question!
Is the metal baffle-type thing behind the glass necessary? It's the one with the holes in a circular pattern. I noticed AFTER installing the glass that it's not there. Do all covers have that part? Were some years different than others? My old cover had it, and the new one doesn't. At least I don't think it had one when I took the glass out originally. Does that baffle thing even separate from the glass/seal part? Maybe I lost it? Maybe it was lost before I got the cover? Does it matter at all? Have I asked enough questions?
Updated....Looks like that part is called an Oil Level Gauge. The part diagrams aren't very detailed, but the ones I found for sale don't look like they have the glass. Is there room for the gauge AND the glass in the same hole? It sure doesn't look like it. Here's a picture of whay my cover is missing...

Anyone have any information on the oil level gauge behind the glass? Should all covers have one?
