Has anyone ever done this to a crank? I wonder.
My crankshaft has a service limit of 31.96mm on the journals and measures 31.92mm.
I just got off the phone from a place that does "metal spraying" using a variety of materials.
They would grind the journals down by 50 thou and then spray this material which has a Rockwell Hardness of 35 on and then grind to size. They tell me that they've done this with cranks from TVR's.[excellent British cars]
Does this sound a realistic way to go or is there something here I don't know?[older I get, less I know:woohoo: ]
Cost : in the region of £300 [$450] for 5 journals.
All comments appreciated. [even yours omr!]

I have seen the spray metal done on industrial cranks before, they dont turn near the rpm as the bike does, so I am not sure how it would hold up.
they used to chrome the cranks for some racing applications, kind of the same process and I know they worked, tht might be another avenue to look at

I have a feeling you may be getting an incorrect measurement. We service a lot of plain bearing cranks (
www.racecranks.com/
) and have never seen any with all the journals that far below the limit without showing signs of bearing failure.
The 650s would kill the cranks in turbos, etc. but I mean KILLED. You wouldn't even need to measure it.
In any event, stay away from that spray stuff. If it was infact worn that bad, you could get a good used crank for way less money and it would be many times more reliable.

Thanks a bunch Jay, thats the kind of info that makes this place soooo good.
Funny you should mention inaccurate measuring, the tool I'm using specifies an accuracy of plus/minus 1 thou, and I'm half blind [no joke] so I'm going to plastigauge with the new shells and get my associate in crime to confirm the reading. I'll put some piccys up for the [ladies of the night]
Can't thank you enough for that. Best Wishes.
