Is there a difference in deck height from mating surfaces of cylinders and heads to the top of the head where the cam roller mounts??? The reason I ask is , I replaced the head on my 78 KZ1000 LTD, with one from Ebay. The head had 32 tooth sprockets on the cams and my original head had 30 tooth, also when I place my cams in this head the chain is very tight and almost impossible to start the cam roller tower bolts. Since this engine has been bored to 73MM would it be possible for someone to shave enough from the base of the head to get more compression and also remove a link to compesate for the difference.

differant crankshaft center pin diameter.the big pin crank has a 16t center sprocket which takes 32t cam sprockets.the smaller more common crank has a 15t center pin to go with 30 t cam sprockets B)

I made the typical MURPHY.I put the 32 tooth cams in without checking or counting the teeth and got them to tighten down of course when I turned the engine over with a wrench it got out of time. I took those cams out and put my original cams 30 tooth sprockets and they wouldn't tighten down without a lot of tension on the cam chain. I'm going to remove the head again and check the cam chain follower sprockets to see if I bent them , that would be the weekest link and could bend before the chain or crank sprocket would break>

Since you turned the engine over with the wrong sprockets installed on the cams you better check your valves while you have the head off.....

Also check the cam chain follower in the front of the cylinder block. I think you're smart to look inside the engine before you try to start it.

I would think something would have had to bend or break for you to be able to get the cam chain on the sprockets and the top idlers installed.
Good luck,
Buzz

I didn't spin the engine over with the starter I just turned it real slow with a wrench, as soon as it jammed I stopped and backed it off and didn't try to turn it anymore. When I pull the head I'm going to check everything I can see for any bends.

check the seal on the valves pour some varsol or kerosene down the ports when you get the head off you could possibly have bent the valves. if the cam chain is tight with the smaller sprockets double check that the cam chain is on the crank sprocket properly also make sure the tensioner is removed when installing the cams
