GPZ550 - KZ550C oil pan and cooler compatability

I was thinking of adding an oil cooler to my 1980 KZ550C. Is it just as simple as swapping to a GPZ oil pan and cooler? I don't mind fabbing brackets to mount the cooler, so if the pan fit, seems like an easy upgrade. Anyone done this? pros, cons, etc?

I haven't done it, but should not be a problem. The 81 kz550D GPZ motor uses the same bottom end castings as the 550C so it should bolt on. I can't say for sure if the 82-83 KZ550H gpz oil pans will bolt on or not.

The 550 oil pan gasket fits the following models:
KZ550-A1 (1980)
KZ550-A2 (1981)
KZ550-A3 (1982)
KZ550-A4 (1983)
KZ550-C1 (LTD) (1980)
KZ550-C2 (LTD) (1981)
KZ550-C3 (LTD) (1982)
KZ550-C4 (LTD) (1983)
KZ550-D1 (GPz) (1981)
KZ550-F1 (Spectre) (1983)
KZ550-F2 (LTD Shaft) (1984)
KZ550-H1 (GPz) (1982)
KZ550-H2 (GPz) (1983)
KZ550-M1 (LTD Shaft) (1983)
KZ750-G1 (LTD II) (1980)
ZR550-B1 (Zephyr) (1990)
ZR550-B2 (Zephyr) (1991)
ZR550-B3 (Zephyr) (1992)
ZR550-B4 (Zephyr) (1993)
ZX550-A1 (GPz) (1984)
ZX550-A2 (GPz) (1985)
ZX550-A3 (GPz) (1986)

The '82-'86 GPz550 had an oil level sensor in it, where your's has an oil pressure sensor I believe?

I'm thinking you shouldn't have any issues with bolting one right on if the gaskets are the same, oil cooler and all. You'd just need to make some fittings to mount the cooler to the frame.

The GPz550 Pan:
KZ550-H1 (GPz) (1982)
KZ550-H2 (GPz) (1983)
ZX550-A1 (GPz) (1984)
ZX550-A2 (GPz) (1985)
ZX550-A3 (GPz) (1986)

Your oil pan was used on the following:
Model (8):
KZ550-A1 (1980)
KZ550-A2 (1981)
KZ550-A3 (1982)
KZ550-A4 (1983)
KZ550-C1 (LTD) (1980)
KZ550-C2 (LTD) (1981)
KZ550-C3 (LTD) (1982)
KZ550-C4 (LTD) (1983)

The '81 GPz550-D1 had the oil pressure switch in the pan and is a one year, one model only part, according to www.buykawasaki.com Looks the same, but might be different side pressure switch or something to have a different part number for the pan and switch.

I just checked and it actually does say "KZ750-G1 (LTD II) (1980)", but I don't believe it. I think it's another parts diagrams screw up :)

I looked up the oil pan gasket for a 1980 KZ750G, and it fits the following.

KZ750-B1 (1976)
KZ750-B2 (1977)
KZ750-B3 (1978)
KZ750-B4 (1979)
KZ750-G1 (LTD II) (1980)
KZ750-K1 (LTD Belt) (1983)
KZ750-K2 (Canada Only) (1984)
KZ750-M1 (CSR Twin) (1982)

That makes sense, same gasket fitting a 550 is crazy :D

I was thinking about drilling and tapping my stock oil pan (I have an extra just in case) for some fittings, using a generic oil or trans cooler from a car, and using copper tubing to plumb it all in. More work than switching pans, but cheaper and I think it will look cool as hell.

Ok, time to resurrect the threat. All of the gaskets listed are part # 11009. The problem i am running into is that on PartZilla, all of the Oil pans for the different model and year 550's are listed as 49034. I have been PM "LoudHVX" but don't want to keep beating up his inbox.

84 GPZ 550 www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Kawasaki/...50-A1+GPz/parts.html

The only difference is that there is an oil cooler option for all of the GPZ's in the main menu.

11009 is the diagram reference number & not the full part number. same goes for 49034.
click the part to get the part number & cross-reference. the x-ref isn't 100% accurate, so double check the results with the donor models or at Kawasaki.com if possible --- their info is incomplete since they changed their site several years ago.

If you have a 550A & the gasket is the same as the GPz or Zephyr 550, then I'd guess you could use the oil pan from one of those models. KZ/ZX/ZR/550. The 550H & ZX have a large oil level sensor in the oil pan.

Don't quote me on this, but I think both oil lines connect to the flange on the front/leading edge of the oil pan. If you do a search for ZR550 oil pan, you can get a better look at the flange & how the oil would flow thru the pan.

If the 550 manual has an oil flow see-thru engine diagram, you might be able to figure out how the oil flows.

One is a feed and the other a return. You should be able to purchase a 550 cooler w/lines for cheap too, that way you then get a complete kit.

I have searched for the better part of the day and get lots of pics but none that specifically show where they connect. Another member talked about drilling and tapping the pan but I assume there has to be some sort of push/pull to the oil of which one of the line is pressurized and one is a return.

I assume by the attached image that the lines connect directly to the front. Does none connect to the pump section of the pan?
