motor extraction/insertion was created by dman3998
I know this may sound like a really dumb question but I had a heck of a time getting the motor out of the frame when I started my rebuild project. (1000 B3) I even took off the PCV outlets on the top and the oil filter cover on the bottom.

How does one get it back in without scraping the hell out of the frame? or the motor for that matter. and yes I took off all the removable mounts and brackets. I did it alone that probably didn't help. must be some tricks to it.

Thanks\

i take old inner tubes and slice them lentgh ways then wrap them around the frame tubes stand over the frame and lift away the rubber will keep the frame from getting chewed up on some frames it is easier to pull the valve cover and install it that way. i've heard of guys laying the frame over the engine on its side but i've never tried it my self.

On my kz650 project, i layed the motoron the side and slid the frame over it, that worked out quite wel with only minor scrape. im intrested to hear the responses because im gonna pull the motor on my z1 for a rebuild, and dont wanna scrape the frame when it goes back together.

I do it like timebomb, except didn't use tubes and scratched the frame. Sit on the bike normally and lean over and heave a little here and shake a little there. B)

I've done the "lay the bike on it's side and lift the frame from around the engine" thing. It works, but it's still a pain. Now if I'm gonna pull an engine, I take off as many parts as possible to make it lighter and more manageable first. Covers, clutch, starter, valve cover, cams, head, drain the oil. I may seem like a pain, but I find it easier and faster, not to mention easier on the back..the things are heavy!

P.S. It also helps to have at least 2 people to help you pull it out.

I laid it on its side to get it out. but after spending a million hours shining up covers and painting the frame I kinda wanted to avoid any damages. Maybe I can make a wood and carpet blocking set up that would hold the motor on its side without scratching anything and then drop the frame over it. have to noodle on it for a while.

thanks for the suggestions.

I'm guessing they weigh 160-180 at least. all I know is they are a s@#tload lighter with all of the parts off of them. I pulled my 550 motor the other day, that thing was a feather compared to my J motor.

I don't know if its the weight, or just the awkwardness of straddling, and bending, but it sure gives the lower back a workout. It ain't fun till she runs, then you seem to forget about the pain.

I just found a post on wiredgeorges forum about installation. The guy uses some 1x3 boards to straddle the frame, slides the motor in then jacks it into place with a floor jack. has potential.

put a floor jack under it if the rest of the bike is together to help start removal process.wrap the frame with some water pipe insulation like you buy at menards when you put it back in,and remove exhuast studs before you remove it or install it every inch helps!B)
