Just got my kz 1000 head and have ?'s already was created by oldkaws4ever
Ok guys, i will be the first to admit this will be my first kawasaki motor that i tear apart and rebuild. The rebuild will consist of, a 1979 Kz 1000 head, hand lapped valves, stock pistons with new rings, new studs snd cap bolt's and thats pretty much it as far as new parts. Im also going to purchase the complete engine gasket kit from z1 enterprises. I have a question, would it be ok to run my z1 cams in the 1000 head?

that would be the z1 cams for sure, they are the same cams if im not mistaken right? I was talking about the cylinder studs, my motor has around 38,000 on her. Oh i scored a kz 1000 valve cover off ebay, and i bought a set of the APE block off plates, do i still have to block the 2 holes on the head under the plates?

stock cylinder studs and nuts should be fine, block off plates should cover everything.im not a big fan of lapping valves, not really affective imo anyway.with the valves and springs in motor flip it on the exhust side with intake ports pointing up take and fill intake ports full of solvent then take an air nozzle and blow air around edge of each intake valve where it meets the seat and look for air bubbles in ports through the solvent.then flip it over and do exhuast side,no bubbles ?valves are sealing.cheap and affective for a budget rebuild.B)

Very good chance if the head is original that the guides would be shot.

exactly Jay thats why i dont reccomend wasting time lapping the valves if your gonna take em out ya might as well do a real valve job and check guides and replace seals,i dont think its in his current budget though.;)

Note that no one mentioned that if the bottom end on this thing is a MK II type, the crank sprocket won't much like the cam sprockets on Z1 cams. Also, any rebuild should include ALL NEW cam chain and associated parts.

Nope the motor is a 74 z1 900 not an MK II type;) ;) . Im not adding any more power, so i didnt think a new chain was needed, and it was a really quiet motor, so i think the cam chain parts are ok, but when i tear into it i will know for sure, if it needs replacing, i will replace it. Thanks
