Self porting head? was created by iroc355
just wondering if anyone has tried doing some mild porting on there head themselves and if so how did it work out? i kno a lot of automotive guys who've done some slight porting on their own heads, just wondering if it is somnething worth trying on the kz's?

its a kz900 head, all original and untouched.

in my younger days, I did a lot of gasket matching and cleaning up of ports,, now that I know better, I would rather have it done by someone who has a flow bench that can verify the ports flow evenly, and they can get the most bang for the buck

I matched my intake side of the head to the intake boots. I dont know how much of a difference it made or if it is accurate, but it seems to run great.

I did some mild porting on my head, mostly cleaning up casting flash and seam lines. I definitely notice a difference!

See here.

a port match, and mild clean up isnt that bad. clean up the casting flash ect, but dont change the shape any unless you are a pro and know what you are doing. I did a bit of work to my 12 head. used a $20 dremmel knock off:P

Many years ago I was a clubhouse racer, and had the good fortune to meet a Master machinest w/a flow bench. He transformed my 87 hp GS1100 to an 1164 cammed/flowed 132hp. w/33mm smoothbores. years went by and 36mm slingshots added a couple ponys'and made bike smooth and consistant ride. Tom Wirth at Mountain Macine Performance, depending on his mood, is a crochety SOB and by his own account usually over-worked. however, If he takes a gleening to your' project I can think of no better.

If I had loads of extra cash, I'd send my head off to Extrude Hone. Something about the fluid dynamics of of abrasive flow machining really appeals to me, like a Play-Doh Fun Factory. Seems like it takes all the guesswork out of shaping the passages. OE manufacturers are starting to use it on their manifolds where it comes in really handy in polishing those long intake runners.

The media they use is a semi-solid material, impregnated with abrasive particles. Try to hold some in your hand and it'll run through your fingers, but as soon as it hits the floor it becomes rigid. If you pump this stuff through a passage it flows like a liquid but solidifies when it meets an obstruction, which is where the abrasive qualities come into play.
