I've tried a number of different ones. I have the one APE sells, I have a Craftsman one, I have a couple of other ones too - but the only one that works properly is the Snap-On version.

Snap-On part is A50 or A50A - you can get the tool with two different racks - both are useful... Not cheap new, but often they come up on ebay for $30-$40.

It's not about money with this tool - many of the cheaper ones fail totally to bite into the studs and just slide around the stud.

o.t.c makes a set of individual stud pullers they are a socket with a sprag in side that grips the body of the stud not the threads and they won't scar the stud body up so that you can reuse them if need be, they come in 6mm,8mm,10mm, and 12mm sizes the really nice feature about them is that it is a socket so you are not limited space wise like some of those gear type pullers . i have a standard set as well for all those h.d's i have to work on from time to time. they also can be used as an installer as well.

Yep, Motion Pro makes the same stuff....maybe they come from the same factory. MP also makes the stud installers that fit on the threaded end. I have both sets of these nifty little tools.
I have used a pipe wrench in the past because I was worried about wrecking the MP removers. I use the MP removers only on smaller studs....especially ones in hard to get at places.

i bought mine from mac tools years ago.
it's just one of them tools you only use once in a great while but are gratefull you own when you need it.
i don't care if mine galls the studs, i throw them out any way.
i have another version i'll snap a picture of when i get to work.
that set works great for the smaller studs like exhaust studs.

someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

When I did mine this summer I needed two vise grips. One simply wouldn't do it. Then, it was about a 1/4 of a turn at a time for just about every one of them. Very time consuming. i couldn't find my pipe wrenches that day.
