hi all,
i am going to tear apart bike this weekend and hopefully get the pistons and jug installed...i bought ape heavy duty studs and a pin removal tool...
any tips?...my only worries are concerning cam chain..i just dont want to screw it up as far as it dropping when i install other parts...i think i will be going it alone for this phase..no second set of hands...bike has 30k on it and i am wondering if a stock cam chain can take the stress
of heavy duty srings and ape 410 cams when i have the head redone down the road..just kind of thinking out loud.....how much would i expect to pay for some mild head porting?...i would like to get the most of my time and money....thanks in advance for any and all replies.....keith

change the cam chain, if it drops down in it's not a big deal, every time i take a motor down it gets a new cam chain. it's just a little extra piece of mind. if you are going that far with it you might as well split it and check out your outer clutch basket and transmission and replace all those thirty yearold gaskets and seals and make it all pretty again. you have all winter. by the way what are you going to run for carbs and exhaust.

thanks for the reply.....i am going to use my current carbs and i am currently using a vance and hines with the comp baffle....iirc the carbs are 2 sizes up on pilot and 3 on mains although this formula might be out the door with the new set up..
as far as tearing it down all the way, i m not sure its within my realm and its just gonna be a street bike with the occasional blast....i m not the dump the clutch at 6k at 60 mph wheelie kind of guy.....keith

I can't help, but will mention I made the big mistake of putting 10.5-1 Wiseco pistons in a 1982 GPZ1100 and it would not run at all on pump gas. Would run great for a few miles till it heated up, then detonation at any throttle opening under even the slightest load. Some guys may not have problem, but thought I'd mention it. I was extremely disappointed to say the least.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

cometic makes them so does vesrah and athena any i've missed guys. you should be able to get them from parts unlimited,z1 enterprises and ape as well any number of places, as far as tearing down the motor you are already doing the hard part by taking off the head and barrel the rest will be alot easier, you will be happy if you do it .just follow your manual step by step and you should have no trouble. it is well worth the extra effort. have i lied to you yet.

as we know "nothing is foolproof to a sufficently talented fool".
no need to be worried about splitin the cases it sounds much worse than it really is,nothing jumps out at you nothing tricky to re-set or anything.as timebomb33 stated getting the head off is the hard part, and thats not hard.yes a "new" stock cam chain will hold up to your 1075 just fine.a used one "might"but then you are gambling your parts and labor.on top of all that nothing can compare to being able to go through your engine in your head while you are trying to go to sleep, instead of counting sheep  .
besides you have all of us "know it all smarta$$es" to fall back on if you get stumped:P .

i make what i can,and save the rest!

10.5 will run on 85 octane at Denver or Salt Lake City elevations..

13-1 is a different story bud. pinging knocking banging actually sounds like a hammer inside the engine

do not forget air cooled engines have an operating temperature that will get to 350 F head temperatures and operate just fine.. if the engine burns your skin that is correct.

as for a camchain...
if you are doing redline clutch drops get a new one
if you ride smooth and like roll on the power leave it alone and just do the top end.

when it is time to street cut 2 and 3 gear do it then...
Last edit: 30 Oct 2008 08:05 by trippivot. Reason: added a suggestion about cam chain
