Wiseco 1075 kit HELP

26 Sep 2008 11:26
#238779
Finally getting round to fitting the 1075 kit that has been sitting on my desk for the last 6 months and straight away I am right out of my comfort zone

In the instructions with the kit it says to check for proper ring end gap by putting the piston rings in to the bore, squaring them up and measuring with a feeler guage.

If I have done my calculations correct the top ring should have a gap of 0.014 inch and the second ring a gap of 0.015 inch.

I have put the first top ring in , squared it up and measured the gap at 0.010 inch.

So what do I use for filing 0.004inch off a piston ring?

The second ring has a gap of 0.020 inch so it appears the gap is too big, what do I do about that?

I was expecting to just fit them. Was not expecting to do this at all. My Naivity.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

To properly cut the ends of rings you need a tool that holds the ring in place and cuts it SQUARE. Google ring end gap tools.

Have you tried fitting the rings in various cylinders to see if fit is ame in all cylinders.I've found that fitting & checking the rings from Wiseco kits in different cylinders can yield the fit required.

.004 is not much.put a bastard file in the vise and hold the ring in your hand kinda like you were grabbing someone by the throat.then put the ring up to the file and squeeze the ends closed on the file and push pull it to remove the needed material.be careful go slow the file can remove alot quickly.i have used this method many times and will again.

Have now tried all the rings in all the bores and they are all the same , so is it going to be a big problem having a 0.020 inch gap on the second ring?

We recommend .003" per inch of bore, so you will be fine with .010" in a 1075. Don't bother filing them.

Spoke to the engineering company that bored the barrels today, they day its bored to the clearance on the piston skirts and that the 20 thou gap on the second ring is fine.
I dont know, still waiting a reply from Z1 enterprizes and Wiseco.

Wiseco is bringing those rings in from Japan, and in the last several years it seems that the gaps are on the high side. My opinion is that they may have had problems with people not checking gaps and locking rings up in the bores and wanting Wiseco to take care of it, so they may have had NPR open the gaps.

most ring manufacturs call for .003" per inch of bore so your top ring won't be a problem your second ring should not be a problem as it's main job is to scrape excess oil off the cylinder its secondary job is to keep compression gas out of the bottom end put the motor together and have fun with it

Thanks for the replies, Jay I can understand the reasoning behind what you say.
Will I be ok with that 2nd ring gap at 20 thou as timebomb says???
