If you have the yellow kz750-4 manual, I think I know what the problem is....

Pg 17 shows the clutch adjustment turning the adjusting screw in (clockwise) until it becomes hard to turn, then backing it out 1/2 turn counter-clockwise before locking it down.....

If you go to the 1982 supplement in the back (pg291), they changed things so now you turn the adjusting screw counter-clockwise until it becomes hard, then 1/4 turn clockwise before locking it down.

I would guess that if you follow the procedure in the back it will correct the problem. I used the revised procedure this Spring on my 1982 KZ750-H and it worked fine.

Good luck.

Was there a pop/clank -noice when pulling lever? If you have "the 3 ballbearing-release-gizmo" cluch you may have pulled bearings out of the grooves i.e you have too long pull in the lever. This means that clutch is jammed open. Simple test: open the 4 bolts holding the sprocket cover. Just loosen them all and they should drop back to their grooves and tighten bolts back.

Remedy: After adjusting the release mechanism in the sprocket cover adjust your clutch cable so that there is only just enough play to operate the clutch i.e there may be pretty much free pley in the lever.
