Alright, I got the spring and washer from a Kawasaki dealership and I replaced the filter..

Thanks for the advice!

Oh great. I've changed my oil 3 or 4 times at least, and I've always put it back the way it came to me, the cup on the bottom, spring and washer on top of the filter.

What damage have I possibly done?

I doubt any. The spring keeps the filter snug against the case. You may have let unfiltered oil through if the top holes are exposed.

The holes in the bolt are set in a position where it's impossible to really foul up anything by assembling wrong. I believe the main function of the spring is just to keep pressure on the filter to keep it firmly planted. Way they came was spring on the bottom, but if on top no big deal. No little deal even. Even running no spring is no problem. Of course better off always using all the correct parts, but the spring is not all that important.
