06 Feb 2006 23:09
Hello . . . I bought my first bike last year. 1982 KZ750 - I had a friend do some work on it to get it running great. The bike didn't come with a manual and I want to change the oil and filter and I have no idea how to do this. (well a little idea). Will someone please explain in detail how to do this. Go slow, I am a girl.

youve got a seperate drainplug and oil filter cover under your bike,im guessing its the same as 900-1000 series.warm up the motor first then remove the drainplug once oil stops coming out reinstall plug clean any trash off plug before reinstalling.then loosen the oilfilter bolt it holds a seperate round aluminum piece that filter sits on top of remove filter and clean the round piece the filter rests on apply some clean oil to the rubber o-ring install new filter and reinstall assembly back into motor, tighten all bolts but dont go crazy youll need to take them off again the next time!id say start with 2-3 quarts of good 10w40 oil, stand bike up level check oil level in sight-glass on right side clutch cover if there is 2 marks on glass try and get oil level close to upper but dont overfill.start motor let run 5-10 minutes ,check for leaks.turn off motor wait 2-3 minutes check oil level again.make sense?
goodluck,happy wrenching!

Changing the oil on the 750 is a snip.
Like wireman says you have a separate drain plug..which I dont think is shown in the diagram. It's a bit forward of the oil filter bolt and a bit to the left hand side.
Just do like everyone says and you'll be fine. Clean oil is the life of an engine.

I'm sorry to bring this thread back from the dead, but I have a question regarding the oil change..
I just did an oil change on my newly acquired, never run in 15 years 1981 KZ750-LTD-4.
I saw on the "OIL PUMP/OIL FILTER" Kawasaki parts diagram that there is supposed to be a spring (92081-1018) between the oil filter and the oil filter plate (13169-1110). When I removed the oil filter, there was no such spring.. and the oil filter plate was placed -above- the oil filter..
Did I miss something? Or misread the diagram?
Thanks!

There definitely is supposed to be a flat washer and spring pushing against the end of the filter. Somebody must have forgot to put the spring in at sometime past.

I have not owned a KZ750/4, but I have owned a KZ400/2, KZ750/2, two KZ1000s, two Concours and a ZRX1100. On all of them the order of parts from top to bottom was (is) filter shield (#17 in daigram), filter, washer, spring, cover and bolt. The spring is necessary to insure that the filter sits snugly against the shield and in proper relation to the ports in the bolt. Unless the KZ750/4 is different from these other engines, the diagram is incorrect.

The correct sequence is as the diagram shows. At the bottom is the oil filter cover with the O-ring; next up is the oil filter plate; next is the oil filter spring; next is the washer; next is the filter. The washer protects the bottom oil filter grommet from the spring. Take a look at the parts diagram or the factory service manual for the 750-4 or KZ650 and you will see this is the sequence given. Also, as the original owner of a KZ650C1 I can assure you that this was the way they came from the factory. Incidentally, if the spring was mounted under the filter plate the washer wouldn't be needed becasuse it would float lose between the plate and the filter since the filter is recessed in the center. Uh oh, so if it's supposed to be like the diagram, there is something wrong with my bike..
I guess I should drop the oil, find the spring and washer parts and redo the oil change? Or can it run like this (from bottom to top: bolt, cover, filter, shield)?

Well, slap me silly :silly:
There's always something new to learn around here. I wonder why the shield or fence is on the botom in some engines? I r befuddled.
:S
Omega,
If it were me, I'd pull it out and get it right, but sometimes I obsess about such things.
