ok i bought a kz1000 g that had been sitting for ten yrs yes the gas smells GREAT! any way im going through the fuel system (have some carbs if all else fails) so i know i gotta get that going but is there any thing i should do for the engine it self, other than changing the oil?take the pan off? give me advice with the thought in mind that i am actually building "my bike" as well(a 76). this has chrome that is peeling off for days. looks uggy on the outside(Has 25k on it) and i wanna run it asap but not irresponsibly.
any thing i need to look out for? got it for 150$ and has an unscratched kerker in decent shape on it so can't go wrong eh.

If you just want to get it to run to see if it runs, you might want to take the carbs off and spray them out a little, take the plugs out and put a few drops of oil in each cylinder and crank it over a bit. Then put the plugs in and fire it up. These bikes recover from sitting for long periods better than probably any bike. It will run like S but it will run. Then you can get into the carbs and electrical.

It's not clear (to me anyway), but if the bike has the original fuel injection system on it, then I would dump some fresh gas mixed with Fuel Injection Cleaner in the tank and run it.
That's after doing the new battery, oil change, tires, chain, and etc stuff.

After I got it started I'd check the valve clearances, just because it's probably never been done.

ok so i went through replacing hose and gas. battery etc. any way cleaned it up and in aabout three seconds of cranking it started! wasn't expecting that! thought a few pops and bangs first but it didn't started right up. tons of carbon came out then i shut er down after a few seconds and called my friend (took longer to start it on the phone this time of course) but it started. reved high found an intake leak. that helped but the fast idle is frozen so im working on that. 150 bones and i got a bike that should work. She ain't pretty but she'll work yahoo!
