HELP No Start!!!! UPDATE
07 May 2008 18:35 - 18 May 2008 06:19
I just got done replaceing the starter clutch to be able to start my 81 KZ550 ltd. Now the bike has compression, spark, the carbs have been fully broken down and cleaned (no rebuild the bike only has 11k). I checked the timing by lining up the timing marks and checking the position of the lobe. Its correct. When it turns over it doesnt even pop. So i pulled out the starter fluid (yes i know big nono but desperate times desperate measures) and it wouldn't even pop. After about 8-9 tries it poped on one cylinder and shot a fire ball out carb and exaust. Since then no such luck. Theres a gallon in the tank is that enoughto get fuel to the carbs on reserve. Also i know that the petcock is proly in tough shape might that also be a fault.
Right now i have the exaust off the bike and no air box. I now that the air box dont matter but wat about the exaust. Im going to get a timing light to double check the timing and test the compression again tomorrow,
Any ideas, thoughts, or comments would be greatly appreciated. Im pulling my hair out as another beautiful 80 degree day slips by.
****************UPDATE********************
Alrite Ive taken the ignition of to check to make sure that the pin has not been sheered. Ive checked the timing spot on. Checked the compression again. The valves are all good no adjustment needed. It hasnt slipped timing the cam chain is nice and tight.
Anymore ideas before i sell this headach and cut my losses
****************New Update******************
After adjusting the cam timing a few links im able to get it to pop but its only poping on one cyl. #4. All the rest the exhaust is ice cold but #4 is nice and warm.

Make sure that your coil wires are not switched. Black goes to 1/4 and green goes to 2/3.

Very good point. I would just switch the coil wires and give it a try - you can't always go by the color. They may have been switched at some point. (Don't ask how I know that...)

yeah i just switched the plug wires around. It was easier i hate takik the tank off it a pain in the ass to get the carb lines off and on. I havnt checked the compression with a gauge but none of the cylinders are dead (good ol finger test lol) and the timing lines up. How do you test the coils. Maybe the spark is weak?

I know it sounds stupid, but you sure your timing is not 180 degrees off? set at Tpdc on #1 with valves closed?

yes ive switched all that around and no luck yet. Would the valves be that far out of adjustment that it could be keeping the bike from starting. Other than the valve the only thing i could think of is the spark is to weak. How do you test the coils.

I switched the coil wires in desperation and all it did was turn over then bam itd make a loud not so good noise and stop the engine. mSo im guessing that the time is not off 180 degrees

Did you pull the plugs if so what shape are the in(color)?
With the timing 180 out or by switching the coil wires you should get very loud backfires through the exhuast.
Did you pull apart the advancer mechanism and magnets under the timing cover? If so you want to make sure that you reinstall the magnets in the correct position or else the bike will not run correctly. I found this out after pulling my hair out for a week.
Good luck
