Launching hard from a 60mph highway stoplight side by side with a good buddy of mine, I must have limp ankled the 1-2 shift because just as I got back to full throttle, she popped out of gear and revved to the moon!

Idle was low at the next light and my Acewell gauge telltale page showed 12,200rpm! Also hear a slight tap tap tap from the right side of the motor.

I limped and low RPM'd home to the shop. Pulled the plugs and pinned the throttle and did a compression test, going left to right from #1 - 105, 100, 20, 105. So I definately floated the valves and bent them up in #3, and may have nicked them all - was expecting 150+, won't know till I get it apart...

2400 miles into my freshly built big bore cammed cafe racer, and finally having solved some charging and electrical gremlins. Oh well, nothing money and time can't fix!

I will report back and show some pics of the carnage!

Definately have a Dynatek coil-cut rev-limiter on the shopping list so we don't have to do this particular dance ever again - at least for this reason!

She's on the Pit Bull stands for the forseeable, at least we have a rainy and cooler weekend on tap so I can get her apart...

I am beginning to think it doesn't like me! Shame, oh well time to get busy. At least I've got 3 other bikes in tip top so I'm not wasting a beautiful Spring!

find a dirtbike shifter with same number of splines, they tend to be a little shorter/easier to get positive shift:(

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

Heavily disappointed and disappointing.

I was with the thread that documented your electrical problems, and was glad that it seemed to be ironed out.

Hope it is an easy fix bro'.

Sorry about that, it's terrible when so much hard work goes up in smoke so fast. If it's "just" the head and valves, that's at least something you can get your arms around. You don't have to pull the engine out.

I had a similar disappointment when I did a rebuild on my 750.... and about 100 miles after (running perfect) the cylinder base gasket started to disintegrate. In a couple of weeks, it failed bad enough that the cylinder shifted enough to knock the compression down to 20 psi in both holes.

had to taer the whole thing down to the rods again.... and managed to snap a piston ring going back together the second time.

But eventually I got it all fixed up and it runs like a Swiss watch now.

hang in there..... you can beat it as long as you keep fighting.

I can hardly see the tear stains on my keyboard now.

They been putting rev limiters on race engines for years....

Not to mention, I think they put them on new cars. When I got my new Chevy Cavalier Z-24, I wasn't used to the engine. It is an FI 2.4L 160HP engine that pulls REALLY strong to redline and always sounds like its revving a lot less than it is.

A couple of times I stood on it in first gear to get up to expressway speed and felt the engine cut off for an instant then come back on just before I shifted. I noticed I was hitting red line.....

I'll bet they have a computer chip in there recording all that for when you need engine work under warranty and they are going to say NO.....

you can pull info from cars.
when i worked at saturn a young kid's car was towed in with the engine locked.
same story, i was just cruising at 60mph when she just quit.
i hooked up the tech 2 and read the freeze frame data.
he changed his story when i showed him that his car told me he was going 83mph, in third gear with the engine turning 7800 rpm's.

a rev limiter is a great idea.
i install them on my bikes just for that reason.
cheap insurance after an expensive build.

someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

Sorry to hear about the bike - it's definitely looking awesome!! I agree with Jay, a rev limiter is cheap insurance at $110. Easy to install and set up too. I would definitely recommend getting one when you get your bike back together again.

Hope things go well on the re-rebuild.
