I just bought a set of '84 GPz1100 cams off EBay and they arrived today. The seller removed the sprockets for shipping. Now I don't know how to tell which cam is intake and which is exhaust. In the photo below, I have added the stamp markings in RED for clarity. One cam has "R1" and "H" stamped on it. The other has "R8" and "B" stamped on it. Can anyone tell me which is which?

Thanks.

Well, they may be. But they have different stamped markings, so I'm assuming there is a difference.

There must be some difference, it just that I can't see any from the picture. I can tell mine apart because the exhaust has a tach drive gear on one end.

Good eyes. Actually they are in fact the same. Look at the part numbers and they use identical cams intake and exhaust.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Okay, thanks.

So why do they have different numbers stamped on them?

The different numbers may be the result of one cam being replaced at some time.
Maybe because of a warranty issue.

In any event the cams are the same.
The difference is in how you mount the gears.
Do you have the manual or do you need some guidance?
At this point I highly suggest getting the adjustable gears.

Agree with RONKZ650...they are the same. The numbers could be for reasons known only to Kawasaki. I think your concern is being positive and patient while installing and aligning the sprockets properly. One set of bolt holes for the exhaust cam, and one set of bolt holes for the intake cam(on the sprockets of course!:P ). Then start counting pins!!!!
Check the manual page; the procedure is pretty much universal for our beloved beasts.

Thanks, Tux. I have the manual, and know how to mount the sprockets. But thanks for taking time to post the relevent pages. I just needed to make sure there was no difference in the cams, and it appears there isn't.

Why? What would adjustable gears do for me? I assume I could get those from APE?
