I just finished checking the cam timing on my z650 hybrid and have made some handy tools, a steel dial indicator plate, a top cam chain guide, a vidio camera and tv

so, (ZR750 head and GPZ750R1 cams) when checking the inlet cam with the moded rockerbox in place, inc gasket, i came up with 106* centre lobe height and when i removed the guide i found it to be 107.5

my exhaust is now set to 104* and the inlet at 106*

I think you'll get a few more comments, but for us, less than inventive genius level, back yard mechanics...what did you do, how does it work, and how did you make them?

Ron just asked the same questions I would have, but he was a lot more intelligent in "delivery".
Nice job there Jimmy. Very impressive AND clever!!!
Keep us posted on how everything works out.

Btw, I don't suppose you live anywhere near Memphis, TN do you??? The time has come to degree my cams and it is scaring the crap out of me!! I was never accused of being a mathematics kind of guy!:( :( :( :(
Seriously though. Nice work.B)

Did you use a ZR-7 head? Or did you use a Zephyr 750 head?

I have a ZR-7 head in my shed, and I want to put it on my KZ700. I also have a set op GPZ cams, so I would like to put them in the ZR-7 head, but I've read that the ZR-7 cams are a bit different from the older KZ or GPZ cams... (not the lobes, but the camshaft itself).

Thanks Ron & Inline, I live in Sydney Australia, perhapes your all in bed when I post, I'll send this at our 6am

I was more interested in the numbers thing @ trying to get the cams degreed were i wanted them, which is the inlet cam a little higher number 106* and the exhaust lower @ 104*, standard on this engine is 105*
I'm vary interested in what members think of these numbers given the setup i have and the fact I'm only a novice and have done cam timing about 4 times over 30 years.

I find doing the job easier now with these tools, so now I may be inclined to check the cam timing on my other bikes when I'm doin the shims. Having the little telly and a cam corder seems to make it halve the job, no goin back and forth from one side of the bike to other

The plate is made from 1mm gavanized steel , just trace the rockercover onto the steel with a fine point texter and cut it out on a band or jig saw, then drill three hole as in the picture, 2 front and 1 rear. You can use this to mount your dial indicator on which has a magnetic base and gives the dial indicator a solid base - vary important
The cam guide (special part #99) cut from an old kz750 rockerbox once again on the band saw, cut leaving 3 bolts on the left and 2 bolts on the right as shown, fit with a standard gasket. Only needed on heads with rockercover type camchain guides, not entirely nessesary if u know the exact degree difference between the cams without the rockercover on. Thats why I've done it, and found it to be approx 1.5*, where as someone said to use 4*. I suppose there could be differences between models or even wear and tear, I'm not sure, so #99 fixes that:cheer:
My dial indicator is a mitutoyo .01-5mm and has a 2.5mm thread at the point and i have fitted a 25mm long screw to extend down to the valve cup, it is very important that the indicator is as close as possible to being inline with the valve. Set this to 0 when the the valve is shut, and the indicator at appox 1.5mm travel
Set up a degree wheel with a pointer and your engine at #1 TDC, important to have this spot on
Turn the crank clockwise till the valve is open 1mm exactly, record your degree eg inlet 8.5*, then keep turning the crank till the valve is 1mm exactly before it closes, record your degree eg 40.5, then do the sums
8.5+40.5+180/2 (-the smaller #) 8.5=106 centre lob measurement
If you need to adjust your cam then you will have to remove the sprocket of the cams and elongate the bolt holes to adjust
I'v put my gears into a lathe and turned down the face to the bottom of the embossed shapes for the bolt heads to sit flat when tightening,
Dont forget, double check everything again
happy to help with any other tipsB)
cheers
