I dunno about that.. I have an 82 kz550 that im putting together, and when i got it running i ran it without that cover. There was no oil at all coming out of that.. And yes it had oil. I also asked on here before i did it thinking that it was a wet system and was told it was dry, and im inclined to believe it..Maybe there is a difference between models, yrs, cc's?

Yes,I suppose it could make a difference,on what bike it is.
I know very little about any other model of KZ bike, other than the liter-bikes.
But I can guarantee you that the 900's and the 1000's DO have a wet stator.

Could be Sandy.. Now im curious to know which bikes do/dont have a wet system.. This is the original reply i got from the post i was talking about.
From; LOUDHV
There should be no oil in the alternator. You can run without the cover (which also holds the stator), but you have no charging system. You should be able to run off a fully charged battery for at least an hour if you pull the fuses for the lights.

Well here's a pic of that 550 you're talking about, and it clearly shows it not having a grommet.
I'll do a parts cross ref on that grommet and see what other bikes use it(that part number, anyway)

Well that's simple...Steve(Kawsakiman) buys the BEER!
Well I don't see where that grommet is listed in my cross-ref program, even for MY bike.I'll look again later though.
So your 550 DOES use a grommet for the wiring, and it's dry?
It must be there just to keep the dirt out then, hey.
Well I just learned something new on the 550's,lol.
K Steve...BEER!

I just realized...the grommet for the 1000's probably comes with a new stator(attached),if you look at the picture(just found it).

The 550's have a grommet and wires coming out the bottom but don't need oil in the housing because the starter clutch is located inside the case.
