should I use this in addition to the grommet, or should a new grommet do the trick?
traded my classic Kz's for a 2001 Kz1200r

Remove the cover, and clean all the old sealer you put in there trying to stop leak.
I use high temperature silicone seal. It is about $4 a tube from the parts house.
Slide the grommet about 2" away from the cover and clean the wires and grommet thoroughly. I like aerosol carb cleaner as it dries without residue.
Slide the grommet back into position.
Then clean the wires again in the area the grommet just slid over.
Put NO silicone inside the cover.
Put a small amount of silicone in the groove around the grommet before you slide it into the housing.
Put a tie wrap around the wires about 1" from the grommet.
Bolt the housing on before the silicone dries.
Wait until the silicone is dry and then work a small amount of silicone around the wires between the tie-wrap and the grommet. Make sure you have completely covered the grommet and sealed it to the case.
I have done this on 6 KZs in the last year and all seal perfectly.

You do not need to replace the grommet, (although it helps).

Good info FB.
I'll be doing the same thing as soon as I get my parts in.
I had the same problem with mine.I put a brand new one in last season, and even with siliconing like you said, the dam thing still dripped.I'll have to try the zap-strap and see if that helps when I install the new one...thanks.

Get some shrink insulation pieces from the auto parts or Raddio shack to go over the wires when you solder them back together.
It would be silly to do otherwise. Do it right the first time or find a supplier of left handed shoes, because your engine will drool oil on them otherwise.
Best regards, from someone who had this happen before.

Yes,I for sure did use shrink-tube on the soldered connections, and I also used a high-heat(black) silicone on the surfaces where the grommet sits in,and I also used it on the outside of the wires, but it still leaked(only from the grommet area).I let it all cure for a least a full day, too.
I've never used any of the three-bond products, but I know it's a heck of a lot cheaper than Yamabond!
I'll be getting some of the three-bond when I order my stuff from Jeff.
