Slick and bars, stock clutch. Lock-ups or Sliders are a waste on these "little motors". This bike ran 9s as a 1015 25 years ago. As a 1045 ran bests of 9.39 @ 138 in 1986 and 5.87 @ 116 with a 1.28 60 in 1992 in the 1/8th carrying 640#

i would be happy with a 1.40 60', but im running dot tires and no bars;). my best was a 1.58 so far(need practice!!!) and i messed up the 1-2 shift so it wasnt my best et run. my quickest pass had a 1.65 60'...if it had a 1.28, it should run 8.77  i was getting 119mph in the 1/8 and 147s in the 1/4 with a best of 148(stock motor btw:whistle: )

07 MDP Rookie of the Year
01 ZX-12R street/drag bike. 8.97 @155.7 pump gas, dot tires, no bars, no power adders. top speed in the 1/4: 161MPH

Yes, my point exactly! Certainly only my personal opinion but enough HP was being made 25-30+ years ago in these little 960/1015/1045/1075 motors to give modern sportbikes "fits" on the Street. It's not about a "magic HP number" but "it always was and always will be" about "bike set-up optimization" for the intended purpose and then being able to actually ride it. He can accomplish what he wants to do on gas and carbs with a "little motor" without a (choke)"big block", (choke choke) "turbo" or a (choke choke choke) "nitrous bottle", "God help us"! Just race short races 1/8 or 1/4, not a mile, preferably on the track! There are Dot tires available today that are "much better" than the old A1/early Goodyear tires of that period. They go 7.20s on available DOT tires now.

yeah, its all in the setup and driver. the first 60' make or break a pass. i started out running high 11s my first weekend(first wknd/ season racing in my life) with horrible 2.0+ 60's and after a few weekends i shaved over 2 seconds off my ET. and i only changed gearing a bit, added a pipe, switched tires, strapped the front end down. your typical bolt on stuff. just those little things, plus me getting used to the bike made huge improvements with very little hp added. practise practise and get the right setup. you dont need 250 hp to run low nines

i started out running high 11s

When people get hung-up on magazine Dyno HP and 1/4 ETs that is just "not reality" for the average street squid. It does indeed take practice to run the #s. Same thing applies to an old Z. Practice.practice, practice! This guy started this thread because he wanted to know what it would take to have enough HP to run 10s. I still say that is not a problem even for a 30+ yo "small bore" Z
