Have a 76 kz900 fouling plugs. If riding weekly they clean up after about a mile of riding. Bike will occasionally blow a little smoke seemingly at random. Bike got a little hot @ Daytona (bike week) a few years ago and shortly after the current issue emerged. Any clues?

I've always run plugs a step hotter than the manual says in my 76 900. But if they're cleaning up within a mile, I think you've got no real problem at least as far as fouling plugs goes.

Is your bike smoking after start up and then running cleaner once it's warmed up? If so the culprit is probably valve seals.

Thanx for the reply- the occasional smoke blown is sometimes while starting but overall, pretty random. Bike went through a phase where it smoked quite a bit and seemed to have a pattern (smoking at start)to currently smoking very little & usually not at all. Thanx again for the feedback.

plugs foul when bike sits up for several days (3 or 4)they clean up when riding at any speed and more recently plugs have to be cleaned frequently unless riding several times a week. Thanx for the responce.

It's weird, my KZ900 does the same thing with smoking. It smoked for a while at startup, now it doesn't. Weird.

with the Moderator being the latest to opine, the concensus points to valve seals.
is this a repair for a novice?
ps- Moderator suffers from (MBD?) that's horrible!?

Would first assure correct valve clearances and correct ignition timing. Also check voltage at coils and for good fat blue spark at plugs.

Would then address pilot air screw adjustment. Screw out to lean mixture by allowing more air.

And also confirm correct service float-bowl fuel level via quick easy clear plastic tube test. Too high fuel level likely results in excessively rich fuel mixture. :)

I would suggest the wg coil mod, I think you may have low voltage at start up, and once it gets warm it cleans up the plugs

Valve seals do not need attention till you're in there for a real reason. Pay attention to the smoke cycle. If it clears up after a few miles it's the valve seals.

Yeah I've been plowing through MBD since 2001. Some weekends I don't have any time for the next project no matter how much I push on the current one.

"I would suggest the wg coil mod, I think you may have low voltage at start up, and once it gets warm it cleans up the plugs"

Low voltage at startup? I'm assuming that your battery has enough Poop to start the bike. Once it's running I can only hope that that the voltage regulator and alternator take over the reigns. I seriously doubt that start up has anything to do with running voltage. It's more likely that use of the enrichment circuit and the cold engine have all to do with the conditions that foul the plugs. Besides Randy says the problem goes away after a mile of running. It's a non problem.

In any case, I've never been a believer in parallel systems. If the connectors are corroded they can be cleaned. I've always been successful at it.
