ok hows this.
do you use the choke to start it?
if so, how long do you leave it on?
maybe you are to large on your pilots.
the tight valves would be more of a problum when it warms up and parts expand.
which could also say rings.
compression jumped with oil?
after it heats up, parts expand and take up clearences.
cold parts are a little looser.
i would pull the plugs and see if there oil or fuel soaked.
unless you are the orginal owner, you never know how bad someone might have abused her.
overheating like in daytona wreaks havock on a air cooled motor.
i'm leaning towords rings.
change the oil and smell it, does it smell like gas?

someday i will be able to afford my kz habit.

It seams there are a few dif posabilities hear and u need to do some detective work to figure it out.
#1. could be valve seals (and guides? ).its common for oil to leak down into the cyl while sitting if u have this issue .then when u star u have foulig till it getts burnt away. repair= repace seals only while motor is intackt on bike. or remove head and do a complete inspection.valve job? guides? seals?
#2. it could be a fuel issue.choke system. =too much fuel. fouls plugs, clears after rideing.or pilot system too rich, but not as likely as choke, since most of your light rideing & cruising would be on this cercuit. so if it was the culprit u would not clean up the plugs unless u drove harder,to get up un the mid needle section.
#3. electrical. week low rpm spark could fowl plugs and reclean as spark gets stonger.I personaly dont know enough about this topic to add any more.

It makes perfect sence to check the electrics and carbs before u tear things apart.
i would think if the smoke was white it would indicate oil burning and if black it would be fuel.
Hope this helps to make for a clearer picture of what is needed.

check compression. It's worth knowing if overheating caused any ring damage
