I second the motion, "RETORQUE the head". The gaskets settle. I read some test reports where they took a bunch of new bikes and broke half them in real hard and half real nice. The result was very close, the ones that were beat had slightly better compression. I just rev it up to around 4 a few times and then to 6 a few. The rapid piston speed begins to seat the rings right away. After doing that, it doesn't matter what you do. They will be seated already or will seat within a few miles. I would do this before adjusting any thing, shut it off and make some adjustments, let it cool for an hour with a fan blowing on the front of the enine. 100 miles down the road later on, let it cool and torque the head again, it's going to be loose again. You can check the torque at 40, 60 80,100+ miles, doesn't matter. If it's loose when you check it, torque it again and it will problably be the last time you have to do it. Running the motor without torqueing, it will leak oil and pound out the base gasket. I've had motors do that to the extent the base gasket had to be trimmed three dfferent times, and was lucky it didn't leak. It's ok to torque after first start up to, just make sure to check it one last time later on.

Check out this link. This article was run in Motorcycle Performance years ago. It has some really good tips from the first guy to take a street bike into the 7's in the 1/4 mile.

back about 2 yrs ago I took some racers advice on breaking in my moped engine. The engine was built for racing and did about 55mph. He said just ride it like you normally would and it'll be fine. We'll I rode the balls off of it and went through 3 engines in a week. So now I take it easy on mopeds and motorcycles about the first 200mph and then ride it like I stole it. I haven't blown an engine and everything has been running well.

The guy at my local autoparts store told me he recommends non-synthetic 20-50w oil. Is this okay?

That is really _REALLY_ good advice!
I have always advised folks to keep their mopeds below 200mph whenever possible!:woohoo: :woohoo:
