Smoke coming from a filter? was created by slickware
Another issue question for you guys.
When I'm idling after maybe 20-30minutes of riding, i notice smoke coming from under my tank.
Closer look shows it's coming from the little filter just above my 4 air pods.
It sort of smells like a rich fuel burn smell, but also a little strange... It's actually pretty gross when you're sitting at a long light and breathing it in because it goes right into your helmet and gags you.

Any idea why it happens, what it is, and how to stop it?
I attached a photo of the general area, sorry if it's grainy or blurry.

I'm not sure, but I think that little filter above the pods is your carburetor vent. Mine uses two plastic hoses that run under my seat. The way mine is routed, any fuel vapor that goes thru the vent hoses just gets pulled back into the inlet (also under my seat). Don't know how much smoke you should get, or how to reduce it. You need the carb gurus to jump in.

If that "little filter" is attached to the canister atop the motor under the pods it is an engine/crankcase breather and you are smelling "blow by" otherwise known as oil/crankcase vapor. Some people will route that small filter back, under the seat, near the battery for instance. That might help with the odor. :)

any particular kind of hose i should use, or is regular rubber tubing ok?
I don't usually notice as much smoke coming out of any other motorcycle as I do coming out of mine. Should I be worried about how much is coming out?

Regular rubber hose/tubing is good.
On my GPz the filter is mounted right on top of the canister and I do get oil vapor blowing thru it and onto the engine a little bit especially if the oil is at its highest level full...I don't think I would call it *smoke* though and it doesn't really smell like *smoke*. It usually blows a little more when the weather and engine temp are hot.
Check your little filter for cleanliness.
Check the rubber tubing for deterioration.
Check the canister/cover on top of the engine (one bolt and its off) to make sure it's not gummed up in the passages there.
Make sure your oil is fresh and not burnt.
Make sure the oil is at the proper level in the crankcase.

If your still smoking after that, there may be another problem but not sure what it would be.

Good luck!

right now it's attached directly to the (cams? engine? i don't remember).
If i throw 5-6 inches of rubber tubing in between to move it under my seat, it won't matter?

I would not route that hose near the battery if it smells like something flammable. Shorten the hose so it barely reaches up to the filter and if it is above the filters, put it below the filters so it is sucked in the intake before the fumes reach you. Also check your compression and read your plugs for rich mixture and check your oil for gas

Are you talking about the hose routing about the valve cover from the emissions system? I have a hose on mine that bridges the 2 ports on my 1000 and takes out the valve.

I don't know what this means. (above)
I like the idea about routing the filter down below the air pods though, maybe that will suck the fumes back in... good call.

Here is the best pic I could find showing my *little filter* arrangement. I'm sure some of my *fumes* get sucked back through the K&N's as you are talking about.
Hope this helps clear up our verbiage.

I found some steel *caps* at the hardware store that are made to press fit into open ends of tubing. The proper name escapes me at the moment but a little JB Weld around the outer lip and pop it into the *hole* atop the reed valve plates. This makes a nice clean looking seal...durable and no hose to muss with or get in the way on the valve cover. :)
