what is insulation in baffle?

was wondering if one of you fine gentlemen can tell what it is that is used as the insulation inside a baffle? I took mine out when painting it and it is pretty torn up. No luck finding any replacements on the web short of entire baffles .. i just want the insulation.

also, is it safe to assume that the more i wrap it the quieter it will be?

thanks,
brian

There's two things I do know.
1. It's not your everyday R-11 type insulation.
2. If you use R type insulation, you'll blow it out the back.

I read an airticle about 20 years ago when I had a 1981 GPz 550 that said, "don't replace the baffle insulation with standard home insulation". I know that dosn't help. You might go to the manufacturer of the pipe and ask their tech line about it.

i got this pipe off ebay and it is labeled as an H.B.E. I can't find anything about these on the web. It looks like a 2-stoke expansion chamber type muffler and is pretty cool.

I go to a hardware store and buy a roll of pipe insulation, it's about 4in wide and I believe 10ft long roll, yellow. Been using this stuff for 26 years with great results, and it's only about $5!!

I shove the R-11 stuff in a ride it. It lasts long enough, about a year. Then I do it again. If there was a fiberglass supply house near you, some coarse mat would do better.

I've heard of people using the pipe insulation, not sure how well it will stay though. Pretty much any pipe manufacturer will sell you a repack kit. I know Yosh and M4 sell the insulation.

exaust packing is available thru parts unlimited. it is in both the on road catalog and off road catalog

tucker rocky has the stuff too.

house insulation or steel wool just causes too much restriction.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but we might as well solve our problems together, right guys? I went on the link you sent duncan and I am wondering if this baffle would be right for my bike. My 1000 has a vance & hines, I don't know what you would call it..... megaphone? I will show you what I have and what I am looking at
