It's summertime here in the southern nevada desert. That means blast furnace heat. I'm needing to change the oil in my Z2 (35k miles). Lots of discussions on oil these past few months. I was thinking on going with castrol gtx 20w-50. Anyone else living in extreme heat running different stuff?

Todays high in fabulous Las Vegas...110* in the 'burbs.. Yeah, screw that "but it's a dry heat" line...it's hot!!!

Another oil post. I love it. I use 20w-50 valvoline in mine. Great stuff. I would reccommend an oil cooler where you are with such temps!

Yeah, desert summer driving is extreme. I was even thinking about straight SAE50. Lots of posts on oil in the forum. Couldn't find any previous posts on oil use in extreme heat. ..................markerdown

I don;t know how it will do in that kind of heat, but I found that when I switched to royal purple the damn thing just ran better. It took less time to warm up, shifts smoother and just idles better. I know smome people don't like royal purple, but I think it's just the best stuff out there. The only down side is it can be a bit pricey.

This Royal Purple...... isn't it synthetic oil? How does it work with your clutch Brandon? Or anyone else who can answer that question. DON'T WE ALL JUST LOVE OIL TOPICS?

I ran Castrol GTX 20W50 in the summer months for years. No problem at all until my oil all turned to sludge. I've mentioned it here before. I'm still debating the cause as being "Castrol" or just an old worn out engine. Hard to say, but Castrol worked fine for many years. On the long trips I'd run Golden Spectro motorcycle semi-synthetic. Don't know if it's any different, but never a problem on those long rides and it was a lot of 100 degree plus for hours on end.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I just changed to the Chevron Delo 15w-40 diesel oil. As of the beginning of 2007 a lot of the oil makers dropped their zinc and phosporous levels which I understand isn't good for our cams and old engines. Rotella actually dropped their levels as well. Chevron Delo kept the zinc levels at .17 . The only thing that high levels of zinc and phosphourous can harm is catalytic converters, so no worries on my bike.

I live in AZ by the way.

Also, all this oil confuses the heck out of me. If you start reading all the threads it makes your head spin. I finally just made a choice and will live with the results. Haa

Oh by the way, I guess the red bottles of the STP treatment and Valvoline Synpower??? contain the zinc and phosphorous additives. GM makes an additive as well called EOS that is supposed to be good.

A lot of the guys over at the turbobuicks.com forums are running this stuff because they have had problems with their flat tappet cams with the new oils out there.

I don't know. I'm still confused.

I've been using Mobil 1 full synthetic 15-50 for four years now, no problems. If your clutch is in good shape it'll be fine. I've drag raced mine, slip the snot out it coming out of the hole, around 7000 rpm without any adverse reactions.(if you don't count a broken friction) A nice side benefit of using syn. is that it transfers heat better than dino oil, a real plus if your using an oil cooler.

ps; shifts nicer too!

To tell you the truth, I haven't had any trouble with the clutch since switching to royal purple. I am going to have to replace the clutch sometime soon anyway, but it doesn't feel like the oil ate the plates any faster. I use dino oil in my dirtbikes, and the clutch in those seems to wear about a quickly as in my kawi.

Been using Valvoline 20-50wt with greast results! You have to remember that these are air cooled motors that really depend on the oil to help remove heat. Plus living in SoCal anything less than 20-50wt would (IMO) be dentrimental to these great motors!

GTX is fine. It ranks #2 as far as heat goes when talking about dino oils.
