Go to NAPA and get a timesert. You'll be back on the road in an hour.

Thanks for your comprehension....It's not the bolt the problem but the that the bolt goes in.

I'll try the timesert.

I will have better sleep....

If your camshaft bolts are the standard 6mm, meaning a 10mm socket is used, 12 ft/lb is too much by about twice. You'll strip them all before long.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

What reference advised 12 FT LBS? I didn't notice what model bike you're working on, but the shop manual calls for 95 - 113 IN LBS (that's 7.9 - 9.4 FT LBS) on cam cap bolts for KZ650. RonKZ650 is correct, if you try to tighten them all to 12 FT LBS, you'll soon ruin the rest. Suggest you buy a shop manual and quality small size torque wrench (that is one that is graduated in inch pounds). Ed

I got the Clymer manual

The bike is a 1984 z1100R

Camshaft cap bolts: 12 ft.lb

Maybe I'm not reading this right or my torque wrench need to go to the garbage..............

That's like 144 INCH pounds...WOW!
Back that off to about 8 foot pounds, for sure.(maybe 9)
When You're dealing with such small torques like that,You're WAY better off to be using an INCH-pound torque wrench,Bud...WAY more accurate that a foot-pound wrench.

I just did 2 bad cam cap bolts last night on my 650. I am slowly finding all the f*ckups the guy that owned the bike before me did including a bad spark plug helicoil and 2 poorly installed cam cap helicoils.

The stripped bolt holes are probably on the exhaust side I would bet as these are more likely to give up the ghost before the intake.

I picked up a recoil (same as a helicoil) kit that included the tap for the 6 mm bolt, 12 helicoils with a thread pitch of 1 to match the cam bolts and the installation tool. Read the instructions carefully before you proceed as it is easy to ruin the head.

You will need to drill out the old threads and if I am not mistaken you will use a 1/4 bit for a 6 mm bolt. Measure with a digital caliper (the extended end how far you need to drill down. You don't want to go all the way through the head with the drill, only down far enough to get to the base of the existing threads.

Once you have drilled the opening for the new helicoil, spray some carb or brake clean down the new hole to clean out the metal shavings from drilling.

Grab the tap that comes in the kit, put a little dab of grease on the tap ridges and carefully screw the tap into the drilled hole. You will need to put pressure on the tap to cut new threads into the hole. The grease will collect most of the shavings when the tap's teeth cut new threads.

Clean the hole again with Q-tips to get all of the shavings out and take a look to make sure they are clean and straight or the bolt will not seat properly. You will probably need to clean the areas around the lifter buckets to ensure you don't get any shavings floating around the top end of the engine.

The final step is to use the tool to screw in the helicoil. Make sure it goes to the bottom of the hole or the cam cap bolt will not make it all the way to the shoulder and sit the cam cap flush on the head.

Test the helicoil with a cam cap bolt to ensure you drilled the hole and set the helicoil in straight.

When installing the cams and caps do not torque the bolts more than 8-9 ft. lbs or you might be doing the job all over again.

Do not use any type of Loctite as you will eventually need to remove the bolts to pull the camshafts to do a valve shim job.
