guy wanto to trade, what do i do?

i know someone who has a 83 gpz750 with no title.
bike currentlly does not run. he says gummed up carbs from sitting.
he wants to trade me it for the red 650 in my profile pictures.
i am kind of at a crossroads here because i spent so much money on the 650 to make it my own.
but on the other hand, i love the looks of a gpz.
i want to check compression and clean the carbs to check out the condition of the motor but if i do he can always decide to change his mind after i get this thing running.
no title scares me.
he got it from a guy who wanted it fixed. then never picked it up.been over a year.
what if the owner reports i stold it?
i got no way of getting hold of the orginal owner.
damm pretty bike though.
he says he wants $1500 or the trade.
if not, he is going to strip and e-bay a classic orginal.
what to do?

So it sounds like this guy had it for a year and never got it running?

Yeah do the DMV, then contact the owner and tell him what his friend is planning to do with his bike. :evil:

no title no deal, here we can get a title via mechanics/ storage lean, let him deal with it

Check with your DMV about buying a vehicle with no title. Here in Kansas the law changed drastically as of January 1 and there is no provision that I found that anyone other than the owner of record who can apply for a lost title. In fact it is now specifically illegal to sell a vehicle without a proper title here.

i think i might have had a change of heart.
i went out to the garage and pulled sara out (oldest daughter named her)
threw a charge on the battery and she fired right up.
poor old girl,how can i trade my first bike away?
i have got the 784 kit and andrews cams tucked away for her.
she was looking at me with that big sad headlight so i promised her i would keep her and build her stronger.
one day and a 12 pack and i'll have her screaming.

i'm going to try to track down the owner and see if i can buy it from him.
i can't let an original gpz be hacked up.

Is the guy owed any money for working on it? If not I would try to find the original owner and buy the title form him. Then just go pick up YOUR bike. Not much the guy can do then. The the original owner you will either buy the title or will pay all costs plus $200 for his time if he will apply for a lost title. Obviously the current keeper has not put a lien on it or else he would have a title for it.

A running bike is allways worth way more than 1 that is not.imo.You can always find a good 750 if you want 1 .

The two ways in Kansas are (1) Petition to quiet title: semi-lengthy process that involves the courts...used in the event of a title dispute, or to squash any outstanding claims one might have on a title, and (2) Mechanic's lean: don't know if this one is still valid, but don't know that it's not. Did the new law address "mech's lean"s?
