I'm gonna be taking my pretty stock bike up to the strip next weekend, and was curious as to what times to expect?

Hey bigphil -Judging from your username I take it you are not a lightweight:)

Let's assume your bike is stock and running properly. If you get a good launch and shift correctly you should be happy getting into the mid thirteens in the 1/4, but there are so many variables, bike upgrades, rider experience and physical size, it is hard to predict.

If you are running in the 1/8 be happy if you are solidly in the 9 second range.

When we read what these bikes ran when they were brand new, the numbers were usually laid down by a factory racer or bike that was specifically tweaked for the test. It would be almost impossible to duplicate the 13 flat 1/4 that Pee Wee Gleason (a 140 lb pro rider) ran on the stock Kz650 back in 1977. Your 750 wasn't substantially more powerful than the 650 so you can use this as a baseline.

THanks for the info, I'm actually about 200 lbs, and well versed in dragging with cars, but it will be a new experience on bikes. I look forward to it, and will post my slip when i'm done

Back when my 77 was young the best I could get was 13.50's. Hopping up the motor took almost 1 1/2 seconds off the ET's though.

Last year I took my 810 to the 1/8 mile drags. It was my first time ever launching from a Christmas tree light and I only had 4 runs during the practice session.

By my own admission, my reaction time and launches weren't as good as they should have been. In hindsight I should came off a little higher than the 3500 rpm's that I launched with. I was shifting around 11 grand and the bike was still pulling.

My times for the 1/8 were around 8.90 seconds with a flat spot at 6-7000 on every shift.

With the new Mikuni 29 smoothbores from WG, another tooth off the front sprocket and a little harder launch I am hoping to crack into the 7's this year.

Oh ya baby....boys and their toys. That's living' :)

yeah just remember 13 seconds in the quarter is still quicker than most factory bigblock hotrod cars .although i wouldnt mind a really low 9-high 8 second run on a bike with no wheelie bar! :P oh yeah, just rember the most important thing is to have a good time and be safe!;)

My favorite race was up against a ratty-looking Kawasaki 500 triple that had all the money into the motor and none into the paint job or cleaning solvents but the old 2 stroker almost caught me at line. Afterwards he asked me how I made the 650 run so hard. I just smiled and said I just put in new plugs and neglected to mention the big-bore kit:)

With the new Mikuni 29 smoothbores from WG, another tooth off the front sprocket and a little harder launch I am hoping to crack into the 7's this year.

Boys and their toys. I hope I never grow up :)

I remember Pee Wee Gleason, he could take ANY bike and within 3 runs would have the fastest time that bike could run! Cycle guide took a KZ650 and with just a 4/1, electronic ign, pods had it running at 12.78 in the 1/4!

1980 KZ650F1, Bought new out the door for $2,162.98!

Before a friend of mine sold his '84 GPz550(bone stock, 'sept for a K&N Drop In Air Filter), he was doing consistant 12.74 ET's at 104 mph, and only getting into 4th of the 6 in the gearbox. He says it's all about the launch. Start at a lower rpm(less chance to loop it), and work your way up till you feel comfortable, and don't stall it, or loop it. Work from there.

I look forward to beating his times. Nuff said!

My friend asked me to run his '82 750 LTD down the strip a few years ago. I was able to get a 13.5 on the first run. Probably could have gotten it down a few more tenths with a few more runs. He had a header and jet kit, but otherwise stock. This is the 4 cylinder model, by the way. I remember being surpised at how quick it was, even compared to my 1000. Let us know how you make out!

The Kaw List:
Current: 79 KZ1000 A3 MKII, 78 KZ1000 A2, 78 KZ1000 Z1-R, 78 KZ650 SR, 80 KE175
Former: 03 KLX400SR, 99 ZRX1000, 82 KZ750 LTD, 80 KZ1000 A4 MKII, 80 KZ1000 LTD, 78 KZ1000 A2, 74 H-2 750 Triple, 78 KL250

12.8 at 101 is my best close to sea level. Could launch harder. my tranny isn't having much fun any more either. slips out in upper shifts. a little sketchy.
