The SR in question looks bone stock, hence my query.

I would think that even a high performance engine would benefit from a thermostat controlling the flow to the cooler as it won't always be operated at 90% and I would think that a regulated temperature would be better for it. In other words, the oil shouldn't be prevented from reaching its operating temp and care should be taken so it's not exceeded either.

But, what do I know? I'm tinkering with stock stuff. :S

This Lockhart cooler has a thermostat built in.I hope it works.Ill be running Amsoil synth.in it.I know these motors can run hot.The deeper gpz oil pan must need a different pick up?
This SR650 has only 3400 orig miles.

Oh the Duster340 is fast....Kawasaki Fast

Whoa, wait a minute! Are you saying that I can't install the GPZ oil pan (and thus the cooler) on my KZ750 without also changing the oil pump pick-up? Are you sure the GPZ pan is deeper?

That's good information to know about the Lockhart, Bandit.

Perhaps the easiest way to know whether the oil cooler/thermostat is working is to figure out a way to plumb in a thermometer and watch the oil temperature.

The 83 GPZ750 and the 79 KZ650SR oil pump assemblies have the same part number (16082-064), and the pick up is part of the oil pump, so there is no reason to change anything related to the oil pump because they are the same.

I just looked up the 80-83 KZ750E, and they have the same oil pump assembly part number as the GPz750/KZ650.

Why not do it the easy way and just use the GPz750 oil pan??

They must be pretty common, since I have 3 or 4 :D

Well I can never find any.... searched ebay a thousand times. want to sell one?

The ZR750 Zephyrs use the exact same gasket as the KZ650's and GPz750's, so I'd imagine the oil pan and cooler from it will work too. Maybe broaden your search and see if there's one listed on eBay.

And AFAIK the GPz750 oil pan isn't any deeper than the KZ650 pan, but does have a diff oil relief valve mounted in it, and of course has the openings in the front of the pan for the cooler lines to mount to.

Steell and RRRR,

I feel better already. Now all I need is a week off so I can get a jump start on this project bike!

I have at least two GPz750 oil pans, maybe 3 or 4, if anyone wants one, the cost will be shipping plus a donation to KZR.

Fair enough?

fo rthe gpz oil cooler instal are there any parts besides the odvious ones?

I have the pan, oil pan gasket, lines and i am looking for a cooler that is both cheap and in good shape...

but is there anything else i will need? any seals?

I am collecting parts because i have limited time to work on the bike. (i will only be home for about 3 months before my next adventure).

1977 kz650 c1

bought it because I was told it would never run again...I like to prove people wrong.
