OOhhhhh Boy!!!!! Need a Little help
17 Dec 2006 20:07
Hey all, How is everyone? I need a little help. I picked up an 81 KZ1100-a Last year for a great deal. It is in awesome shape EXCEPT for one thing on the top end I believe it is called the valve cover sorry if I am wrong the previous owner had stripped out a couple of the main bolts on each end so they put a nut and a longer stud in . Okay I am fine with that but the on they broke off a chunk of the block. What should I do?? There is not any parts bikes around here and I did have a mechanic try to use epoxy but you can not tighten the nut enough to stop the leaking. as soon as you tighten it the epoxy breaks. Should I try to get a machine shop to fix it? could they? or does anyone on here have the piece i need??? It doesn't leak tooo tooo terribly but I cannot wear good jeans when riding. lOL. any help would be appreciated. THanks Darren Ps there is a nut epoxied with it.

Can't really tell whats wrong from the pic , but if its in the aluminum part, I'd be looking for a good tig welding shop to fix it right.

I think a good Tig weld would fix it up. If not then you will need to look on ebay for a good used block. If you change the block you will also need new gaskets and new rings. The rings might still be good but they are cheap and you should do it so you know that they are good. Also get the cylinders measured to make sure what size rings you need. Hone the cylinders so the new rings will seat themselves correctly. Whole job is not very hard at all.

looks to me like its the head that has some jb weld on it, I think they broke the outside boss on the head, is it leaking oil? if not I would ride it, you can pick up a good head on e bay and change it later

From the pics it looks like the problem is the cylinder head and not the block, and your bike uses the ever popular J head which usually goes for $200 or more on eBay.
If tig welding don't work, then I guess you will have to bite the bullet and buy another head
