1. Does anyone offhand know what the oil pan drain bolt size is on a 1977 Kawasaki KZ650? I have a 77 kz 750 and I know that bolt is a 17mm. I wonder if the KZ650 and KZ750 have the same size bolt.

2. Does anyone know where to get a replacement FUSE BOX for a 77 KZ650? My bike wouldnt start the other day, and I notice the main fuse, the 20A was blown and the metal part melted against the fusebox. For now, I put a new fuse on and wrapped the ends which connect to the box metal clamps, with electrical tape to hold me over.

I installed a blade type one and use the old one for accessories.

Thanks for responding. If there is one thing that scares the heck out of me, its motorcycle electrics. Can you guide me through the process of simply changing the entire box over to blade type, and eliminating the old box completely? Thanks!

Thanks. They seem to be plentiful. See in the link below. However, Ive come to learn the "burning fuse" is a common problem with KZ650s. So as Steve suggests above, I may swap out the box for something modern with blade type fuses:

Thanks Ed. However, as Ive learned this is a common problem, I may update the fusebox to something modern

I bought my 1977 KZ650-C1 new in April, 1977. In 2007 I replaced the fuse holder because the original became a bit worn. The original fuse holder was 30 years old. I thought that was not a bad life span for the fuse holder, so I replaced it with a stock unit. That was a bit more than 10 years ago, and the replacement fuse holder is still like new. Maybe a blade type will last longer, but I didn’t think 30 years was an excessively short lifespan. Ed

That a fair, good and practical point Ed. I think I will follow your lead. I hate dithering with electronics anyway and would be terrified of damaging something. OEM it is.

1. 17mm is the wrench size. The bolt is probably an M12 (ie, 12mm threads).

2. You'll need to figure out why the thing melted. something obviously shorted, but what?

I searched the forum and other forums for background on this issue. Nothing shorted. It seems the KZ650 specifically had this nearly universal (among KZ650 owners) issue with the fuse box: the main fuse, touching the fuse box and blowing a fuse.
