1978 KZ1000 police bike with only 2000 miles

I just bought a 1978 KZ100 police bike with only 2000 miles. I got the bike at an estate auction and it was a one owner bike. Apparently, the guy just liked the police model and bought it for himself. It has been sitting for many years. I haven't had time to clean the carbs and get it to run yet but I expect it will be fine. My first thought was to convert it to a standard model or sell the engine and other parts. I typically restore GL1000s and am not familiar with the KZ1000 police bikes. Does anyone have advice on what to do with this bike? Should I sell it whole, part it out, or convert it to a standard model? The condition is very good except for some rust on the end of the pipes.

Restore, not many of those around, especially with 2000 miles.

I have a 1980 Kawasaki KZ750 Ltd. I bought new. I recently managed to get it out of my garage after 28 years and put it on the road again (2010). I feel like a kid all over again. Since I have acquired 3 78 KZ1000 Ltd, 1 1981 KZ1000 Ltd, and another 1980 KZ750 Ltd. Love the LTD's.

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationYou are seriously considering parting out a motorcycle that is barely broken in with a mere 2,000 miles? You can probably get a few hundred bucks for it as parts rather than a few thousand as a running bike. Think about it before picking up a wrench. Ed

Ed beat me to it!

Restore it or sell to someone who will!

Where is the bike and how much do you want for it?

Hi cfairweather,
A simple deep, detailed cleaning/refurbishment would bring that bike back to unrestored original condition. If it's in as good condition as you say it would be near museum quality. Being a GL restoration hobbyist surely you know that. It would be tragic to part it out.

I seriously hope you consider cleaning/restoring and selling the bike. There cannot be that many around with such low mileage and Ed makes a compelling argument for keeping it original.

Thanks for your advice. I have decided to clean, service and then sell it. I have already started the process and it looks amazing. The exhaust pipes are rusty in a few spots but since it is so original, I am not going to replace them. I will post some pictures when it is clean in a couple of weeks.

Here are some pictures of the 1978 KZ1000 C1A police motorcycle. I serviced it and cleaned it up. Only 2000 miles! Runs great!

Does that left speedo take a set so a matched speed can be recorded for a citation?

That is one nice bike. A pre-outfitted cop bike, it needs to be in a collection. That top box has to be rare as hell, I bet they were almost all scrapped to make room for the radio.

The box may be rare as I have not seen one like it and it is original. I think the right speedometer will capture the highest speed when the pursuit option is enabled. I believe the tires are original too but haven't confirmed this yet. they are Goodyear tires, so if anyone knows what they installed from the factory, please let me know. You are right, it belongs in a collection or a museum.
