Z1 valve cover metal was created by tfh903
Cracked the valve cover on my Z1. took it to the local welder, they couldn't decide what kind of metal it is. It does have some magnetism but very little and not the all the same at the 4 ends. Is it Aluminum (has magnetism), Pot metal aluminum, light grade stainless steal, pot metal stainless steel, or other? They need to know to properly weld it.

It's aluminum. Tried eBay? Z1-KZ 900 are the same.

If aluminum why the magnetism? checking ebay. This one has chrome ends and the rest is powdercoated. I know the powdercoat at the crack will be messed up by the welding but my powdercoater says he can fix that.

yes,, It was all chromed but the chrome was bad except on the 4 ends. So I had my neighbor powdercoat it (except the ends).

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationThat could explain it being slightly magnetic.

Yeah, just replace it. Plenty around. Not supposed to be chromed, just aluminum.

I have welded aluminum for a living my whole life and even though its easy for an experienced welder why take the chance? As cheap as they are compared to an entire engine if the weld fails.IIf your welder cant determine what the parent metal is then they shouldn't be welding it anyway. Just my opinion.

Good luck!

When I busted my cam chain in 78 I used clear silicon and a piece of beer can to cover the hole it left. Lasted until I could get a new one.
Took it out to 1015 at that time. B)

The bare cam covers were usually cast finish throughout with the ends beyond the ribs polished somewhat.
