I can say from my experiences that the oil consumption of stock, non - re - bored 81-83 KZ1000 and KZ / GPz1100's is real, every single one I've sampled burned alarming amounts of oil. Re - boring the cylinders makes them much better....

I've also run into two twisted '81 cranks, one a 1000 and one 1100. Nothing after '81 for twisting, but all the late KZ cranks should have a roller thrust bearing installed.

Yea, I had a 1982 model GPZ1100B2 I bought new. I really liked it, but it did have a few problems, that's for sure. After a little over a year and 24,000 miles I got rid of it and got the 79 KZ1000MKII. The GPZ was a lot faster, but the MKII has been near trouble free in comparison. I rode the GPZ1100 all the way from Texas down to Jacksonville, FL up to Connecticut and back home to Denver and had to push start it the entire trip. I figured I had a bad battery, but turned out the stator was burnt to a crisp. Even with that, the thing made it 4,000 plus miles running a burn't stator. I was lucky that trip.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Yes, very lucky!

My biggest problems on long trips is wearing out chains (it always rains at least once a day when I'm on a long distance tour) and rear tires.

Once I had a big time oil leak start on the base gasket of my trusty 79 CBX while crossing the South Dakota Bad lands and across the central parts of the Wyoming plains in 110 deg. heat. As I rode, I watched, with increasing apprehension throughout the day, the growing lake of golden Red Line oil forming behind the cylinder block. I thought my trip was over and I would be catching a bus back home. Strangely, the next morning in Yellowstone, the temp had dropped to near freezing, and the oil leak vanished and never ever came back...LUCKY!

Yup, Kawasaki messed up the injection on the 1100's,also seems every now and then someone with a Z classic comes on the site looking for a fuel injection module. They did get others to work, The turbo 750's are considered pretty reliable and the DFI 1300's were fine. Those parts are pretty sought after to convert the touchy carbs on the 6 cylinder bikes to fuel injection.

Though by the mid 80's no cared about the electronics, because the engines liked to eject the number 3 connecting rod through engine case...

If I knew what I was doing all the time life wouldn't be any fun.

One thing that I always heard about the GPz1100's injection systems was that the gas mileage was exceptionally good, especially with the 83 - 84 DFI.

I've never had one that still had the DFI on it to test that claim, but that is going to change when the next project gets dropped off here next week, an 83 that still has a working DFI. I plan on going through it and, between my two mostly original '83's, I want to build one completely stock bike from the best parts (except for the exhaust, unless I'm lucky enough to find a mint set of stock pipes somehow). The left over parts will get put together nice (paint, refresh suspension, etc.) and sold off with a freshened up stock 82 KZ1100 chain drive engine in place of the GPz engine (I don't sell GPz engine stuff - I hoard them - as in ITS MINE!). One of my "extra" GPz engines (I just said I hoard them...) will get an extremely serious performance build up (Hello... APE, Cavanaugh, MTC, Web, Fast by Gast...) and will be going into a '82 GPz750 or KZ750L or similar, as a mini ELR replica like Baldy110 has done.

Yea, I was more than happy with the fuel mileage on my 1982. It got 50mpg highway. Of course back then speed limit was 55 and I generally toured at an indicated 70mph, which was more likely closer to 65 in reallity. At that speed the GPZ was great. I really liked that motorcycle and wish I still had it despite the fact it was pretty trouble prone. I liked the DFI, and had no problems with it. Ran real good, always started right up.

If I can get 50+ mpg out of an old 1100, I think I'll have my new sport touring bike....at least for shorter trips, maybe like a week or less...
