Please help me ID my bike! was created by lex.entwistle
I bought a KZ1000 from a guy on craigslist. all he told me is that it is a 1980 KZ1000. The title says the same. Trying to find out more specifically what kind it is. The rear fender seems to resemble a ltd. Can anyone help? I just want to make sure I am buying the right parts. I need a wiring harness.

Can use zedder to help identify the particular model.

> Bike Info
> "Kawasaki Model Information"

Scroll down to "1000 cc arranged by year"

Click on selected model to see info such as range of engine serial numbers, range of chassis (frame) numbers, etc. applicable to the particular model. And compare the range of numbers to the actual numbers on the bike at hand.

Might possibly discover that the engine and frame came from two different models, maybe even different years.

Good Fortune! :)

Question -- Is it for certain that a replacement wiring harness is necessary?

Another question--do you know where to look on the motorcycle for 1) the motor VIN and 2) the frame VIN? Both of those will allow you to narrow down what you have

Take a look on the steering stem neck. You should find a frame number (VIN) stamped into it. You can use that to positively identify the bike's year and model. Take a look at the engine near the oil filler cap. You should find the engine serial number there. You can use that to positively identify the engine's year. It may not be the same as the frame year if a previous owner replaced the original engine. Ed

Thanks! The bike is currently at my friends garage, we are rebuilding it together, so I will ask him for the frame and engine serial number to get a more accurate ID. I know it has a lot of mixed and matched parts. The carbs that came on it were not meant for the engine and the tank was swapped from another bike as well, so it is a bit of a Frankenstein's Monster thing going on.

Unfortunately, The wiring harness currently on the bike has been greatly mangled and modified, so Just trying to get basic things like a tail lamp and head lamp are kind of difficult with the current one :/

Even if you identify the model, I don't think an original wiring harness is going to be of much use. Most of the electrical systems have been stripped from that bike and those that remain are not original. I doubt the builder spent the time to match up the replacement pieces to the original style harness connectors. You've either got to trace and fix the issues in the current harness, or build one from scratch for the circuits you are running.

What state are you in? I hope your state doesn't have any safety inspection requirements.

I live in Texas. All we need is tail light and headlight and a working horn. I'd like the option to install after market indicator lights in the future and odo/tach with some kind of back light, and LEDs around the bike to be more visible while riding at night. My friend and I are about to take it completely apart, sand it down, install new carbs, fix the wiring issues, and get new tires.

That is the plan, anyway.
