GPz750 vs. GPz750R ??? was created by Irish-Kawi
Hey KZR,
Wasn't sure where to post this question but this seemed like the safest option. I've been digging around on Japan.webike.net looking for what parts are out there and offered for my bike. I see most of the fitment listing for parts for GPz750R and has roughly 130 pages of parts for GPz900's and GPz750R's with a few other models like the Turbo's etc but only a handful of items that call out just plain ol' GPz750.
So my question is this, what is the differences between a 750 and a 750R. I know that in 1986 they went liquid cooled and were then dubbed the Ninja and I "think" they were then also called GPz750R but I'm hazy on that. Would like to know so I can have a better understanding of would or wouldn't fit in parts I'm looking at.
Thanks,
Brett

Here in USA, the 1982 GPZ750 was called the GPZ750R, then in 1983 they went to ZX750A model designation, so a 1982 GPZ750 is also a GPZ750R. The ZX750 models of GPZ750 ran through 1985 I believe.

Yeah It's confusing. The problem is that there is the MARKETING model designation GPz750 and the MANUFACTURING model designation KZ750R1 (1982). Kawasaki in 1983 kept the GPz750 model for marketing but significantly changed the configuration so changed the manufacturing spec and re-designated it the ZX750A.
So those offering parts that know there is a difference will kind of jumble up the the 2 designations so they will list parts as fitting the GPz750R(1) or (ZX)GPz750(A), or will designate as dual shock (R1) or mono shock (ZX), etc., etc., etc.,....
So if you have a GPz750 of either variety you really have to know what you are looking for and what you have found to be certain that it is correct.
Add into the mix that in the European market Kawasaki dropped the K from KZ so you also have to look for the Z750R1 for parts.
I'm still learning all of them as well as the parts for the R1 even though it was a 1 year model that were used on later models like the KZ700A and (K)Z750L3 (great for getting a 150 mph speedo from the UK, BTW) and Z750P.

Thanks everyone this is helping a bit and making some more sense. To better illustrate my question and specifically what the Japan.webike.net site is saying I am listing a link for an example.
japan.webike.net/products/176620.html
If you look in the fitment for this part it says GPz750R (Ninja), which leads me to believe they are talking about the 1986 and onwards liquid cooled GPz750R. I further came to this conclusion after looking at partzilla.com as well. In the link below at the bottom of the page for Kawasaki 1987 models you will see ZX750-F1 Ninja 750R.
www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Kawasaki/...ycle/1987/parts.html
So I'm not sure if between these two links this clarifies my point and question or muddies it. Can anyon chime in on this specifically?
Thanks,
Brett

Hey Davido, read through that and did answer some questions and clarify a few things. As you said it's an interesting read, I knew that Kawi had some confusing model and showroom names but never imagined it was quite that convoluted at times hahaha. Thanks for sharing and love reading things like this and history behind the machines I love
