Bout it from a man that this dad had a Suzuki dealer in Dallas. Story goes that when the bike first came out it was not like. Sounds familiar...z1r. So they sold twenty of them that ship to Mexico. After that they only sold two. Every other dealer ship in the US also only sold 1 or 2.
He has another in original condition very low # and miles.
Suzuki Japan flew his dad to Japan and was awarded with two hand made katana swords for the sales .

The one on eBay about one year go if e are talking bout the same one. I as one of the bidders and wen up to $10,2k. Just happen that the man that I just bout the katana from was the highest bidder and purchased it.

Yep you right about the charging system. Found an article about from 2 years ago that mantion this problem.
The problem is that the charging system wires run through the switch block and owners not turning on the lights buring the day that causes the system to over heat.
The solution is either to have all lights on all the time or install a new rectifier/regulator.

The problem is that all excessive power created by the charging system that is not consumed by the bike, is then subsequently shunted back to the stator where it creates heat, thereby cooking the stator and causing it to fail. Suzuki is not unique in this regard. Pretty much all bikes using a permanent magnet charging system have the same problem. Maybe Suzuki's generator made more power than some other bikes? I'm not sure exactly, I just know it was not a Suzuki problem per say.
Fortunately, the invention of the Series R/R solves the problem of how to preserve the life of the stator. These units do not shunt the excess power back to the stator thus preserving the life of the parts. Google up "SH775" and start reading. These units are getting quite popular with both OEM's and aftermarket users alike. I've installed these units on all my bikes and problem solved. For GS Suzuki's, you must also bypass that stupid headlamp loop in the stator wiring. Wire the stator direct to the SH775 and all the charging system issues will be solved.
A little sidebar story...
The early GS Suzuki's ran one leg of the stator output up to the headlamp switch before it rerouted to the R/R, and the other two legs went straight to the R/R. When the headlamp was turned on, all three stator phases went to the R/R to charge the battery, but when the headlamp was off, only two legs went into the R/R. They did this to reduce the amount of excess power created by the generator, and thus preserve the stator.
On later bikes like the Katana's sold in the USA, where there was a law to keep the headlamp on all the time, all three stator phase legs went into the R/R all the time, but the wiring harness still routed one leg up to the headlamp switch before it went over to the R/R. After some years of use the resistance in the connections would increase and this odd routing of that one stator leg would sometimes overheat and damage the harness. Big mess when this happens.
