That looks like the tranny cover to me. Might have gotten off lucky. I'd take the covers off and asses the damage.

Looking at the photos now, you may be right. I don't know that part of the bike well, and it was hard to tell what's what when it's all mangled. The holiday weekend will give me time to figure things out.

Hard to tell but I agree with Steve, looks like bolt on parts: sprocket cover, transmission cover, and crescent shaped metal chain guard. All replaceable parts.
Oh, and your sprocket is worn out. Add a new chain and sprocket set to the shopping list.
Edit: may also need a clutch pushrod, and of course new seals for the transmission cover. Speaking of that, I've got some spare seals if you find yourself in need. Have to check but should have a full set. PM me if you want to discuss.

I looked at the parts diagram at Kawasaki.com, and I think y'all are correct about the hole being in the mission cover. This may turn out to be less miserable than first thought.

Be sure the driver has a proper JIS bit, or a modified Phillips. Those are not Phillips head screw, despite how they look.

A #3 phillips bit works fine. Don't scare the man. :S

I've got a philllips impact driver which has on the one hand worked great for phillips screws, but on the other hand stripped out a JIS screw for me. I also have these impact-like screwdrivers.. see www.amazon.com/Vessel-Megadora-Impacta-P...driver/dp/B003BGZ9CO . They idea is that they are solid screwdrivers, but have the impact driver mechanism built into the handle. Anyone tried one yet? They work great as screwdrivers, but that's all I've used them for.

Fantastic if it ends up only being the bolt on parts - has to be a huge relief if it is.
