Can't quote the book, but 710 pounds is what sticks in my mind. 120 horsepower. Someone stated about the KZ1300: "Purrs like a kitten, Runs like a cheetah, roars like a lion. That stump needs pulled........... get a rope!"

My Z1 is 568. They measure HP at the crank. A shaft robs ponies. I'd like to see what it would put out on a Dyno.

That is true but a shaft is like instant on power. I loved my 850 shaft but it was my first bike. At 7 pounds per pony better shave Divide 200 in to that number and find out how many to subtract from that 120 at the crank routine. My guess is to just keep her stock with a few bolt on mods and enjoy the snot out of her and don't worry about the weight or the HP.

Yeah and you don't have a chain to deal with.

Not arguing as I don't know all of the science here, but how does the shaft rob more power than a chain drive? Very little gear lash in a shaft drive and lots of slop in a chain drive! Both have rubber drive cushions inside the wheel. Surely the hypoid oil doesn't create that much drag......

Just the facts as I understand them.

There's a power loss every time the power rotation changes direction. Unlike sprockets which keep power turning in one direction, this change of direction happens at each end of the drive shaft. Ed

As I said, I don't understand the science. What causes the power drop at the change of direction? It's constant mesh so how does the power fade at the change in angle?

The transmission and the wheel is turning are the same direction with a chain. With a shaft it has to change directions twice.

There's a lot of info about bevel gear power loss available online, but basically power is lost due to friction between the gear teeth, churning of the lubricant, and side loading on the shafts. From what I've read, losses for systems with 2 gear interfaces range from 5% - 15% . Ed

That's about right. I was excited when they came out but disappointed when I read that.
