31 May 2013 09:29
Well i did it. I own a 1981 KZ1000LTD and a 1981 Yamaha XS1100. I bought it yesterday for 400 dollars. picks coming later today when i ride it home. My mom says i cant go anywhere on it until i get it insured
Ill be riding this while my KZ1000 is down for a rebuild. I think im finally gonna do the top end. not sure if i want to split the cases yet or not.

Your Mom is a smart lady. Riding without insurance really is a bad idea. If you happen to hit someone you could end up paying them for the rest of your life if they end up with a long term injury. This could happen even if it's their fault because the law and juries can be tough on the uninsured and don't care much for bikers. Ed

I remember when the Excess Eleven was first released. Darn things were so heavy that every time they went around a curve their weight forced the road to shift into a 90 degree corner. That's why Indiana no longer has many curvy roads.

I dunno lol. my uncle said the XS1100 almost de-throaned the KZ1000 but wasnt quite quick enough. I got it all cleaned up today and road it around a bit. i have an intermediate electrical issue that has something to do with the starter button and kill switch. Also no rear running lights and the tach quit working after going up the street on it lol. It looks a million times better with all the vetter wind jammer shit tore off of it. My camera is dead right now. pics coming tomorrow :woohoo: And as far as the bike being heavy, i could feel it today. it was like a train with a rocket engine on the back. You REALLY gotta plan ahead when stopping. I think it would slow down alot better if it had front brakes though
thats the first thing on the list to order haha

Actually on paper the XS1100 is faster by 4 mph, against the 1981 J-Model. It's also 50lbs. heavier than the same year J-Model 1000. So imagine if it was converted to chain drive and not had to lose the extra power pushing that heavy drive-shaft.

We didn't forget, but this is KT's topic so I kept the topic towards his bikes. I had a '79 CBX as my first street bike, and Honda slowed them down a bit in the later years. Red of course, because everyone knows the red ones are faster.

And this thread could be moved to "Bike Related" topics, although I'd edit gearheadsmm's comment before moving it.
