Why do some race bikes have letters either before or after their number? do these signify anything?

Signifies classes in some racing organizations. Others use color. Others use a combination of color and letter.

Sometimes a letter is added where there happens to be two entries using same number. Easy way to keep them straight and easy to remove after that particular event.
