I think the distance traveled should be added by each signature at hand off.
Example:

When signing the flag:

User Name Date
Year and model
Hometown, State/Province
5000 M/8045 KM

This way we could keep a running tab on the distance covered.

might be hard to ad mileage as several riders may hook up togeather and ride one riding 20 miles another joinf for 50 miles and another joining for 20 miles first guy rode 90 miles while carrying the flag other 2 70 and 20 add em all together too many miles but they all desrve to sign just my .02 but iff I ride 100 miles I'm putting it on there lol

Here's another suggestion.
If each rider reports only the miles ridden while carrying the flags we'll know how far the flags have traveled. If there are multiple riders in a group, they should all get a chance to carry the flags and report that mileage. If a rider has to ride some miles to meet with the guys carrying the flags let him put that mileage down in parentheses so there's a record of that mileage also. If it looks like we'll run out of room on the flags, sign the flag with just the states ridden and send along a spiral notebook for a log for all the rest of the scribblings. If the notebook fills up, the last entry buys another one.Just a thought.

Signing the flag would be cool, but I'm not sure if there will be enough room by the end of it if we all add lots of information. Maybe we could limit it to just our names on the flag, and then...

What if we set up a current progress "diary" on the forum. A place where everybody who participates in the ride contributes to. The story of how the flag traveled, written communally by the people who moved it. That's where putting all the extra information would be needed. Who has the flag, when did they get it, what route did they take, how many people were in the group, any memorable events along the way, etc, etc, etc.

We could have another map and everyone could mark where they live, and where they rode with the flag in their possession.

If we do it online, everybody will share ownership. We'll all be able to add as much information and pictures as wanted, and we'll have less to pass along between riders. It would also help in coordinating riders to a singular timeline, and make it like we are all experiencing the ride as it happened.

Just a few thoughts, not sure what everybody thinks

I always thought a thread started in the "Ride Reports" would happen. Every rider would add to it and the online log is created. It's the perfect place to put pictures. I also like the map idea. The planned route may not always be taken.

I don't think adding a spiral bound notebook to the flags would be burdensome. They should probably be carried in some type of protective package anyhow. Maybe a large zip-lock baggie or something. The riders could read what their predecessors have experienced before they get home. Some tidbits might also be forgotten after a rider returns home. Just my $.02 worth.
