you mean take apart the bike and wash it and put it back together...kinda does not count really???

you mean take a nice kz ,cheap score, and weld a bunch of crap and add weird stuff and mods that suck...not really gonna float either....

to trick a kz or even to "build one"...

it costs money...even parts changers like me can get into 6000.00 from a 500 dollar bike...to have drop dead KZ that turns all heads

the things that work on these old super bikes are pretty much all done before and one needs only follow trusted convention down a few well worn paths to achieve a decent kz...folks who screw em up and then claim they did it on a shoestring....well.....that really aint much to blow a horn about...

it cost a few grand even if someone gives you a garage full of kz stuff...rattle can and bobber club aside

Ok I'll start but I'm sure I can be beat. $700 for a 1979 kz750 that runs, rides and looks good.

Starting is another matter. Needed new battery and it looks like I'll be rebuilding the starter soon.

Here's my bike:

I bought this KZ650 for $150. It's a 1977 B1. Idiot had it painted, so I had not so great original bodywork off a $100 parts bike 78 B2 I swapped on, the charging system did not work, so swapped the entire 78 system over. Had a rusty Kerker on it and one day a guy came in the shop here and said he had a bunch of KZ650 parts for free, so got a 79B3 complete with a good stock exhaust I swapped over. It had 25,000 miles when I got it, now just shy of 69,000 and I've had zero problems basically. Carbs are still not 100%, swapped in other various used parts like brake pads, replaced the chain/sprockets once, tires a few times. I'm still running stock shocks, stock steering bearings and don't see the need to upgrade anything. It runs every day it ain't icy out, my basic transportation.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

We might be tied then. The battery for mine was $86 a starter rebuild kit will be $40. I've got a handful of other misc parts like a tach cable and gaskets. I might come in around $900-$1000 when I'm on the road in the spring. But a lot of that doesn't have to be done.

For $786 I got a bike that would pass inspection and could be ridden safely. Looks pretty good too (see above). It will start it's just a bit of a bear. No tach, but I don't HAVE to fix that, just want to.

1980 KZ550A1, EBAY score, $255 and about 200 mis of driving. This pic is after 50 or so hrs of buffing and spraypainting. I've probably spent another $250 in small parts (brake line, pads etc.) I put about 1800 miles on it this past summer.

I spent $2800 to buy this, and have spent just under $5900 in rebuilding it from the ground up and still don't have all the parts. Still, it's cheaper than a new ZX10, and sexier:blink:

Cool bike, but I think you must have missed the title of the thread. $12k+ isn't cheap by my definition anyway!
