Hi Guys and Abbey,

I've got a Lincoln wire feed that continues to surge. I'm convinced that it's related to the eccentric feed wheel. Have any of you heard of similar problems out there inthe welding world?

Bill

sounds like either your speed or heat is set wrong also the wheels can flat spot.

How would you rate that welder for heat soak and such for using on the frame of a bike? I'm sure it would be fine for brackets etc. but would you use it for something like building a swingarm or repairs of cracks in the frame, etc.? How far would you trust it's capabilities?

Since I've been so good at this lately (miss interpreting)  surge meaning wire feed surge, not current/amperage...

One way or another pretty much all wider feed welders have the same principles of operations regarding the wire feed mechanisms...

As can be reviewed in the attached image, the tension arm assembly acts as a spring loaded tension on the wire being feed off the roll that feeds into the guide then electrode cable to the hand control welding tip.

If there isn't enough tension or there is a bind as the wire is trying to move through the harness it will slip...

Also, if the wing nut on the roll is to loose as this is a spring loaded assembly underneath, it will also not leave enough pressure/tension on the wire feed...

Just a thought....

Open your door so you can see the drive roller. Run some wire out while watching the roller, spool and the wire coming out of the lead. You're just feeding out wire here, not welding. If the roller is moving steadily but the wire is pulling off the spool erratically, you're looking at a misadjusted or worn drive roller. If the wire is pulling off the spool evenly but jerking out of the lead, you probably have a pinched liner or mismatched liner size for your wire. You usually don't want to let your lead line to lay around in coils or snaky as that can cause this. You want the lead to lay out straight or in a fair curve to where you are welding.

If your wire feeds evenly except when you're welding that would be a ground, heat or wire feed speed setting off.

One other thing to check would be some feed rollers have grooves for two wire sizes, so make sure you're matched roller size to wire size.
