I'm a pilot and fly an experimental called an avid flyer, anyway i came across an ebay auction a couple years back for an engine that was converted for aircraft use, basically a late 70's kz 1000 minus the transmission, they were converted mainly to be used in the BD-5 kit airplane. (similar to the little jet in one of the james bond movies ) This guy had over 90 of these engines in crates ready to ship, can't really remember what they did to convert the engines other than a custom machined billet aluminum crankcase with a kz crank and top end on it. wish i had more information on those engines. Has anyone come across one? would like to pick up one if i can

There was a guy here that flew an ultralight that was powered by a Honda 450 engine. Used to see him whenever the weather was good but I heard he had to ditch it into a municipal water supply lake and got slammed with fines. Looked like a lot of fun.

Boy, I can't imagine using a KZ1000 lump in a plane... those engines weigh a heck of a lot. There's certainly far more engine choices from that period that were considerably lighter.

Also, I wouldn't have thought the power band was that good for an application like that. Wouldn't you want to be running in a fairly limited rev range?

Looks like the standard engine in one is a 2 stroke Rokon engine.

thats pretty much what the engine looked like, i'm thinking they were machined to accept a rotax gearbox for gear reduction to swing a larger prop. My avid flyer uses a rotax 582/c gearbox combination. Have almost 700 hours flying behind the rotax 2 stroke engines, super power to weight ratios when flown behind one.
