Thanks for all the input guys, although I am comfortable with dealing with some gas and carb problems, the guy said that it has bent rods too, not something I have delt with before, and certainly nothing I am interested in getting into.
I can give his info to anyone if you are still interested.

AHA!!!!! Finally, everyone was saying that for sure probably nothing wrong with a bike. Just put a battery in it and some fresh gas and it should go. If the owner isn't a nimrod he would get it running before he sold it. If he is a nimrod then still you can never assume that the bike will run. Why would I say offer him next to nothing because if you get beat you aren't out a grand.
If it doesn't run then you MUST assume that it is a POS and treat it as such. Well, you could still get the bike and get another engine or have it fixed. Either way you will be looking at 2500-3000 for a normal rebuild to have someone who knows what they are doing touch it and right there that bike isn't worth much to begin with so.... I'm just glad he was honest and didn't give you the shaft on that shaftie.
The bike still is worth something to someone who likes those bikes and I could bet for sure many on this forum would like to buy it. If it were a MKII I would buy it regardless of condition as I would love to have one to fix up to keep and call my own. That a z1r and another z1 or 2.:P

How in the world do you bend the rods on a KZ1000 and how does he know this? Engine seems in place. Hard to diagnose without tearing into the engine.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Maybe one day he took her out and did a serious hole shot or.... These bikes are pretty bulletproof but maybe a bent valve because the timing chain skipped a beat on the decel. Who knows?

I'm of the same opinion as you Ron, It sounds like a car guy trying to diagnose a bike. That said I'd offer him a hundred and offer to get it out of his way. Has to be worth that in parts.
